Creator Dan Erickson says the choice is about Mark claiming the life his innie has made—not simply choosing one romance over another.
What happens at the end of “Cold Harbor”?
Mark completes the Cold Harbor file, then joins the effort to reach Gemma, his outie’s wife, who is being held on Lumon’s testing floor. He gets her out of the Cold Harbor room, and the two briefly reunite as their outie selves. At the exit area, they switch back to their innie selves. Gemma’s innie asks Mark to leave with her; Mark turns back toward Helly and the other innies.

The finale is listed by Apple as season 2’s finale, released March 21, 2025, with a runtime of 1 hour 15 minutes. Watch or rewatch “Cold Harbor” on Apple TV+.
Why does Mark turn back?
Erickson told TheWrap: “He’s choosing his life over this life that he’s always felt beholden to, which is his outie’s. That’s really the journey of the season.”
#1 Best Overall
That interpretation makes Mark’s decision a question of agency and identity. His innie has formed relationships and commitments through his own lived experience. Leaving with Gemma would mean returning to a life shaped by the outie; turning back recognizes that the innie’s life matters in its own right. The finale does not frame the decision as a straightforward contest between Helly and Gemma.
What is Cold Harbor, and what does the crib mean?
Cobel tells innie Mark that the numbers he refines are a “doorway” into Gemma’s mind. She describes the number clusters as Gemma’s “tempers” and says each completed file produces a new consciousness for Gemma. Cold Harbor is the last file in that process.

- Drama, Blu-Ray
In the Cold Harbor room, Gemma’s final innie is told to dismantle the crib that she and Mark had planned to use for a hoped-for child. TIME’s finale analysis reads the task as probing whether Gemma’s outie memories and emotions carry over into that severed consciousness. The scene establishes the test’s intimate emotional stakes, but not why Lumon considers the result important.
What the finale leaves unresolved
Neither the crib scene nor the file’s completion fully explains Lumon’s purpose. Erickson told TheWrap that the scene was intentionally left open; he said viewers still did not know why the emotional question posed by that room mattered to Lumon. TIME likewise notes that the reason Lumon creates these separate Gemma consciousnesses, and what Cold Harbor’s completion accomplishes, remain unanswered.

Ideas such as a perfected workforce or a larger Eagan project may be theories, but the finale does not confirm them. What it does confirm is the final file’s place in the process and Mark’s decision at the exit.

The three performers are connected to the finale through separate discussions, not one joint explanation. Adam Scott and Britt Lower discuss the episode in the official Severance Podcast with Ben Stiller & Adam Scott; Apple’s episode listing for “S2E10: Cold Harbor” says the conversation covers Helly and Dylan’s decisions.

Gwendoline Christie plays Lorne, head of Lumon’s Mammalians Nurturable department. In TV Insider’s finale aftershow coverage, Lorne is described as becoming involved in the fight with Mr. Drummond, putting Christie’s character directly into the escape sequence.
