“Woe’s Hollow,” Severance season 2, episode 4, jolts Mark, Helly, Irving, and Dylan out of the office and into a baffling company retreat in a snowy forest. The episode’s strangest turn is also its most consequential: the Helly among them is actually Helena. Spoilers follow.
What happens in “Woe’s Hollow”?
Germain Lussier’s February 7, 2025, io9/Gizmodo recap describes an abrupt shift from the preceding episode’s reintegration storyline. Mark, Helly, Irving, and Dylan awaken outdoors in snow-covered woodland, apparently taking part in a company retreat the recap calls an ORTBO. They have to work out where they are and what Lumon expects of them.

The retreat’s route runs through the Scissor Cave and toward Woe’s Hollow. Along the way, the episode introduces the fictional Fourth Appendix and a strange Eagan family story about Kier and Dieter. The unfamiliar setting and ritualized lore make the outing feel less like a conventional team-building exercise than another layer of Lumon’s disorienting world.
Why does Irving confront Helly?
Irving suspects that Helly has concealed something about her outie experience. His suspicion becomes a direct accusation: he tells her she is an outie—and an Eagan. When she responds, “Goddamnit, Seth, do it,” the identity switch becomes explicit to the group: the woman with them is Helena, not Helly.

Milchick orders the Glasgow block removed. After Irving attacks Helena, he is dismissed at the episode’s end. Before leaving, he tells Dylan to hang in there. That final exchange gives the departure a personal note amid the episode’s institutional strangeness.
What makes the episode feel especially unsettling?
The retreat changes the rules
The sudden move from the office to a snowy landscape leaves both the characters and the viewer without familiar reference points. The cave, the path to Woe’s Hollow, and the Fourth Appendix’s peculiar mythology offer explanations, but not straightforward reassurance.

The intimacy carries a second meaning
Lussier’s recap notes that Mark sees Gemma’s face during an intimate moment with Helena. It connects this image to outie Mark’s reintegration, but that is the recap’s interpretation rather than a definitive explanation of the scene.
Irving’s unease has no easy release
Irving’s nightmare and his suspicions add to the episode’s sense of dread. His confrontation brings one uncertainty into focus—Helena’s identity—while his dismissal leaves the group with a changed dynamic and no comforting resolution.

Is it really the wildest episode yet?
“Wildest” is a judgment, not a measurable ranking. Lussier calls the episode “maybe the most messed up and intense episode yet,” and the headline makes a similarly emphatic case. The label fits the episode’s abrupt setting change, surreal company mythology, identity reveal, and Irving’s exit; whether it tops every other episode is a matter of taste.
