The goats are part of a Lumon ritual: Lorne, from the Mammalians Nurturable department, presents a baby goat as an offering to Mr. Drummond. Drummond says it will be entombed with a “cherished woman” and guide her spirit to Kier’s door. The episode reveals the goat’s intended role in this rite, but not what Lumon ultimately hopes to accomplish.
What are the goats for in Severance?
In “Cold Harbor,” Lorne brings Drummond a goat as an offering. Drummond explains that the animal will be buried with a woman and is meant to guide her spirit to Kier’s door. Creator Dan Erickson described the goats’ purpose as part of a ritualistic sacrifice in a post-finale interview with The Washington Post.

The scene connects the goats to Lumon’s Kier-centered ritual practices. It does not reveal the ritual’s full purpose or explain how it relates, if at all, to the severance procedure.
How the finale changes the earlier goat scenes
Season 1: a warning without an explanation
Mark and Helly encounter a Lumon employee caring for goats in a stark room. His insistence that the animals are “not ready” makes the scene ominous, but the first season does not say what they are being prepared for.

Season 2: the Mammalians Nurturable department
In Season 2, episode 3, “Who Is Alive?,” the show reveals a larger indoor pasture and the Mammalians Nurturable department. Its severed workers tend the flock and appear fiercely protective of the goats.
The finale: a ritual offering
“Cold Harbor” gives that department a clearer purpose: Lorne brings a goat to Drummond for the rite. The exchange is brief, but it turns the earlier scenes from a strange workplace mystery into part of a ritual whose wider meaning is still unknown. ELLE and TIME both report the finale dialogue and the earlier goat scenes.

What the dialogue establishes—and what it leaves open
What the episode says
- Lorne presents the goat as an offering from Mammalians Nurturable.
- Drummond says it will be entombed with a “cherished woman” and must guide her spirit to Kier’s door.
- When Lorne asks how many more goats she must give, Drummond replies, “As many as the Founder calls.” The exchange suggests the offering may be repeated, but gives no total.
What remains theory
The ritual language does not prove that Lumon is trying to revive Kier, that goats are used in severance technology, or that every goat is paired with a human death. The finale does not establish those claims, nor does it say that every goat raised by the department is sacrificed. They remain possible audience interpretations rather than answers from the episode.
Why does Lumon raise goats?
The best-supported answer is that Mammalians Nurturable raises goats for Lumon’s ritual offerings; the finale shows at least one goat being prepared for that role. The department’s name and the flock’s care explain who tends the animals, not why Lumon’s ritual calls for them. The connection between the rite and the company’s broader plans remains unresolved.

Where this fits in the series
Apple describes Severance as a story about a surgical procedure that divides employees’ memories between work and personal life. Mark Scout works at Lumon Industries, and the second season follows the consequences of disrupting that barrier. Apple’s series page identifies Dan Erickson as creator, writer, and executive producer, and Ben Stiller as an executive producer who directs five Season 2 episodes.
