Meyers framed the decision as a free-expression issue; the statement was his characterization, not a legal ruling.
What did Seth Meyers say about the suspension?
On his NBC program Late Night with Seth Meyers, Meyers urged people to stand up for free expression and called the suspension a significant moment for democracy. His remarks came the day after ABC announced that it was suspending production of Kimmel’s show.

Why did ABC suspend Jimmy Kimmel’s show?
The dispute followed remarks Kimmel made on September 15 about reactions to the killing of Charlie Kirk. On September 17, FCC Chair Brendan Carr publicly called for the show to be suspended. ABC announced that day that it was suspending production. Contemporary reporting placed Carr’s call before ABC’s announcement; that sequence does not, on its own, establish the legal cause of ABC’s decision or prove government coercion.

ABC said it acted “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.” The explanation was ABC’s stated rationale. CBS News covered the suspension and its context; PBS NewsHour reproduced ABC’s statement.
How did the events unfold?
- September 15, 2025: Kimmel made the comments about reactions to Kirk’s killing that became the focus of the dispute.
- September 17: Carr publicly called for suspension, and ABC suspended production of Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
- September 18: Meyers addressed the suspension on Late Night. FCC Commissioner Anna M. Gomez also issued a public statement criticizing ABC’s decision and arguing that free expression was threatened.
- September 22: ABC announced that the show would return the following evening.
- September 23: Kimmel returned to the ABC program.
ABC News reported the return announcement and the preceding timeline. Gomez’s statement appears on the FCC commissioner’s official page. It was a commissioner’s position, not a formal agency adjudication.
What is the difference between ABC’s suspension and station decisions?
ABC’s action was a network-level decision to suspend production. Separately, some local station owners made their own decisions about carrying the program. Those carriage decisions should not be treated as the same action as ABC’s suspension—or as evidence that every station stopped airing the show. The Associated Press reported on the return and the broader context of those decisions.

The statements and decisions were not equivalent kinds of evidence: ABC gave a reason for its programming decision; Carr made a reported public call for suspension; Meyers defended free expression; and Gomez criticized ABC’s decision. Their positions help explain the controversy, but none is a court ruling.

The cited reporting and statements establish the chronology, the public comments, ABC’s stated rationale, and the return announcement. They do not establish a judicial finding on whether the suspension was lawful or whether government pressure legally compelled ABC to act.
