Sesame Workshop confirmed that Elmo’s official X account was briefly compromised in July 2025 after an unknown attacker published antisemitic, racist and otherwise abusive messages. The posts were removed and the organization said control of the account was restored. A claim made during the takeover about a person in Western Australia was never independently confirmed in the available reporting.
What happened to Elmo’s X account?
Unauthorized messages appeared on Elmo’s official X profile over the weekend of July 13, 2025. Reports described antisemitic and racist abuse, transphobic language, threats or calls for violence, profanity, political comments about Donald Trump and references to Jeffrey Epstein-related files. Some messages targeted people who replied to the account.
Because the messages appeared on the genuine profile, screenshots spread quickly. Their appearance on that profile did not make them authentic statements from Elmo or Sesame Street. Sesame Workshop told news organizations that an unknown hacker had briefly compromised the account. The exact method used to gain access was not disclosed. (ABC News; Associated Press)
The offensive posts were subsequently deleted. By July 14–15, coverage reported that Sesame Workshop was restoring, and then had secured, the account.

What did Sesame Workshop say?
Sesame Workshop described the incident as a brief compromise by an unknown hacker and called the material disgusting. It said the posts did not reflect the values of Sesame Workshop or Sesame Street and that no one at the organization was involved. The wording changed as the response progressed: an initial update referred to efforts to restore full control, while later reporting said the account had been secured. Those statements describe successive stages of the same incident, not evidence that the posts were authorized. (CBS News)
Was Elmo responsible for the offensive posts?
No. The posts were published through a legitimate account during a confirmed compromise, but Sesame Workshop attributed them to an unknown hacker. The accurate description is “unauthorized posts made through Elmo’s compromised X account,” not that Elmo or Sesame Street posted or endorsed the material.

What is the Western Australian connection?
One message made while the account was under unauthorized control named alleged participants in other account hacks and claimed that one person was residing in Western Australia. PerthNow reported the claim but also made clear that there was no confirmation of the person’s involvement beyond the hacked account’s own post. The alleged individual’s name and identifying details are not repeated here because the claim remains uncorroborated. (PerthNow)

Residence in Western Australia, even if accurate, would not establish participation. The available coverage identified no arrest, charge, law-enforcement statement or forensic finding tying a Western Australian person to the incident.

Was there a cryptocurrency or Telegram scam?
Technology reporting noted that the compromised profile retained a link to a Telegram channel and that an earlier channel post appeared to reference possible cryptocurrency promotion. That is an observed or reported element, not proof of a confirmed scam. The available reports did not establish who operated the channel, whether it was connected to the attacker or whether anyone lost money. (TechCrunch)
What remains unknown?
- The identity of the hacker.
- How access to the account was obtained.
- Whether the alleged Western Australian person had any role.
- Whether anyone named in the takeover post was investigated, arrested or charged.
- Whether the Telegram channel was operated by the attacker.
- Whether any cryptocurrency fraud occurred.
- Whether X conducted or released a public forensic investigation.
- The account’s status on August 18, 2026; the latest specific reports in this coverage date from July 2025.
Why the distinction matters
An official or verified social profile can be authentic while its latest post is not. That distinction matters especially for an account associated with a children’s character: familiarity and verification do not guarantee that every message was authorized. Deleted posts may also persist in screenshots and reposts, which can strip away the context that the account had been taken over.

If a familiar account suddenly publishes shocking material:
- Check the organization’s website and other official accounts for a security notice.
- Wait for confirmation before treating the post as an authentic statement.
- Avoid reposting screenshots containing slurs, threats or personal information.
- Do not click unfamiliar Telegram, cryptocurrency, giveaway or login links.
- Report the compromised post or profile through X’s reporting tools.
- Treat any request for money, passwords or wallet transfers as suspicious, regardless of which account displays it.
The bottom line
The compromise of Elmo’s official X account in July 2025 is confirmed, and Sesame Workshop said the hateful posts were unauthorized messages from an unknown hacker. The alleged Western Australian connection came from the compromised account itself and was not independently established. Nothing in the available reporting supports presenting a Western Australian resident as the perpetrator.
