Yolanda Saldívar remains in prison after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles denied her parole in March 2025. The board’s decision was not a release, and reports say her next review is scheduled for March 2030. Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, widely known as Selena, was fatally shot in Corpus Christi on March 31, 1995.
What happened on March 31, 1995?
Selena went to meet Saldívar at a Corpus Christi motel regarding business records, according to reporting based on trial testimony. She was shot there and died that day. The meeting and records dispute provide context for the events; they do not establish a definitive psychological motive.
Contemporary coverage reported that more than 50,000 people lined up to view Selena’s body before her burial on April 3, 1995. The Associated Press reported that figure in its 2025 coverage of the parole decision. Associated Press via PBS NewsHour
How was Saldívar convicted?
A Houston jury found Saldívar guilty of first-degree murder in October 1995. She received a life sentence with parole eligibility after 30 years, as reported by The Guardian and Associated Press via PBS NewsHour. The conviction and sentence are established legal outcomes; claims about motive should not be treated as proven fact.

Where is Yolanda Saldívar now?
After the parole denial in March 2025, Saldívar remained incarcerated under her life sentence. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles said its mission is to render “impartial and informed release decisions and clemency recommendations to the Governor,” while prioritizing public safety and safeguarding victims’ rights. Reports say Saldívar’s next parole review is expected in March 2030. That is a future review date, not a scheduled release date: parole eligibility allows a case to be considered, while approval is a separate, discretionary decision.
