Gomez captioned the January 12, 2024 photo, “We shall not speak lol.” The pose was a joke about the viral speculation—not confirmation of what anyone had said.
Why Gomez and Blunt covered their mouths
Days after the January 7 Golden Globe Awards, Gomez and Blunt posed together at the American Film Institute Awards luncheon, which celebrated AFI’s 2023 honorees. Both covered their mouths for the photo. Gomez shared it on her Instagram Story with the caption, “We shall not speak lol,” as reported by E! News and The Independent.

The image played on the attention paid to lip-reading interpretations of separate clips from the Golden Globes. It did not establish that the two women were referring to the same conversation, or that any interpretation of either clip was accurate.
What was speculated about Gomez’s conversation with Taylor Swift?
A video showed Gomez talking with Taylor Swift and Keleigh Teller at the ceremony. Online viewers speculated that Gomez was telling Swift about Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet. Gomez later rejected that reading: she said she had been telling Swift about two friends who had hooked up. E! also reported an additional claim from a source that Gomez had not seen Chalamet and Jenner at the event; that detail was attributed to the source, not stated by Gomez.

What was the Emily Blunt and John Krasinski lip-reading rumor?
A separate red-carpet clip showed Blunt talking with her husband, John Krasinski. Viewers speculated about their exchange, including an alleged remark about divorce. The Independent reported that a TikTok lip-reader instead interpreted the exchange as: “It’s chilly here, right?” and “Can’t wait til we’re indoors. It’s windy.” The publication also reported that an Us Weekly source denied trouble in the marriage.
Those competing accounts are interpretations and attributed claims, not a verified transcript. The available reporting does not establish what Blunt and Krasinski said.

What the clips and photo do—and do not—show
- Recorded event: The Golden Globes clips captured Gomez speaking with Swift and Teller, and Blunt speaking with Krasinski.
- Directly attributed statement: Gomez said her conversation with Swift concerned two friends who had hooked up, not Jenner and Chalamet.
- Later joke: Gomez and Blunt covered their mouths together at the AFI luncheon; Gomez’s caption made light of the lip-reading attention.
- Unverified material: Lip-readers’ proposed dialogue and anonymous-source claims do not prove what was said in either conversation.
