Universal Music Canada announced the single on March 14, 2025, ahead of their first collaborative album, I Said I Love You First, released March 21. The music video is an artistic depiction of the song, directed by Petra Collins—not a documentary record of the date.
What “Sunset Blvd” is about
Universal Music Canada described the song as inspired by Gomez and blanco’s first date on the historic Sunset Boulevard. That establishes the real-life starting point, but not that every scene or detail in the song or video recreates what happened. The label’s German announcement characterized the track as capturing the feeling of a crush, with pop production and double-entendre lyrics; those are the label’s descriptions of its tone.
The Associated Press, reviewing the album on March 21, 2025, interpreted “Sunset Blvd” as one of its suggestively sensual moments. That is a critic’s reading of the song, not a statement by Gomez or blanco about the date. The review described the album as moving among different genres and emotional registers.
When the song and album came out
Universal Music Canada announced “Sunset Blvd” on March 14, 2025, as the third release from I Said I Love You First. The label identified the two preceding releases as “Scared of Loving You” and “Call Me When You Break Up,” featuring Gracie Abrams. The album followed on March 21, 2025, through SMG Music, Friends Keep Secrets and Interscope Records.
