Christy (2025) stars Sydney Sweeney as real-life boxer Christy Salters Martin, with Ben Foster as her husband and trainer, Jim Martin. The film also portrays people from Martin’s life—but one supporting character is a composite, not a one-to-one depiction of a single person.
Christy cast and real-person comparisons
| Actor | Role in Christy | Who the character represents | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney Sweeney | Christy Salters Martin | The real boxer, whose career brought her to national prominence in the 1990s. | The film’s lead portrayal is based on Martin, who was available to consult with the filmmakers. |
| Ben Foster | Jim Martin | Christy Martin’s husband and trainer. | The story includes the abuse Martin experienced and Jim Martin’s 2010 attack on her. |
| Merritt Wever | Joyce Salters | Identified as Joyce Salters in a cast-comparison result. | This role mapping is reported by a secondary source; the available evidence does not support adding an extensive biographical profile here. |
| Katy O’Brian | Lisa Holewyne | Real boxer Lisa Holewyne, who was Martin’s wife and former competitor. | The role association comes from a cast-comparison result; TIME identifies Holewyne in a caption as Martin’s wife and former competitor. |
| Jess Gabor | A composite former-girlfriend character | Two of Martin’s former girlfriends, combined into one character by the filmmakers. | A comparison result calls the character Rosie and links her to Sherry Lusk, but she should not be treated as an exact portrayal of one person. |
TIME’s interview with the filmmakers confirms the composite character. The supporting-role names for Wever and O’Brian, as well as the name Rosie, come from a surfaced cast-comparison result rather than an accessible production or interview source. The distinction matters: a screen character can draw on real events without representing one individual exactly.

Who does Sydney Sweeney play in Christy?
Sweeney plays Christy Salters Martin, the real West Virginia boxer who became a prominent figure in women’s boxing during the 1990s. Martin was available for consultation while the film was being made. In a September 5, 2025 interview with TIME, screenwriter Mirrah Foulkes said, “It was important to us to try and stick as close to historical accuracy as we could.”
Director David Michôd described the challenge of making a biographical film with its subject available to consult: “I had never made a movie like this before where I was making a biopic, essentially, about a real person who was there and available for consultation.” These are the filmmakers’ stated aims, not a guarantee that every scene or chronological detail is exact.

Martin praised Sweeney’s transformation in an Associated Press interview: “She got to be this totally different person that none of you expected. She wasn’t the beautiful, sexy Sydney. She was the tough, rugged Christy.”
What the film’s real-life story includes
Christy is a sports drama, but Martin’s story is not only a tale of athletic success. Her rise in women’s boxing unfolded alongside abuse by Jim Martin, her husband and coach. In 2010, he attacked her; the Associated Press reports that he was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The film’s central relationship therefore involves serious violence, not just a coach guiding an athlete’s career.

The film is based on real events but makes adaptations. Beyond combining two former girlfriends into one character, the available reporting does not establish which other scenes or timeline details were compressed or changed. Avoid treating every supporting character or dramatic sequence as a documentary-level record of events.
