Spoilers for “Sifu: It Takes a Life.” The ending shows the cost of revenge more clearly than its outcome: after repeatedly dying and returning older, the martial artist is seen as an old man back at the dumpling shop. The episode does not establish whether he kills or spares his father’s killer.

What happens at the end of Secret Level’s “Sifu” episode?

During his pursuit of revenge, the young martial artist fights through a nightclub and repeatedly returns from death, visibly aging each time. The episode then cuts back to the dumpling shop shown at the beginning. Now an old man, he shares a reflective exchange with the cook about the years they have spent perfecting their crafts.

That return gives the short its emotional resolution: the protagonist has spent his life pursuing revenge, while the cook has spent his time mastering his work. The scene does not show what happens to the revenge target. The available ending analysis does not confirm a kill, an act of mercy, or any other outcome, so the target’s fate remains unanswered.

How does the episode connect to the Sifu game?

Death and aging turn the game mechanic into a life-cost metaphor

The short adapts Sifu’s recognizable death-and-aging premise: each return allows the protagonist to continue his pursuit, but leaves him older. In the episode, the mechanic makes the cost of obsession visible across a single journey.

The nightclub draws on the game’s Club level

A December 10, 2024 recap describes the episode as a condensed adaptation of Sifu’s second level, The Club. The short uses the neon nightclub setting and a boss encounter featuring a bo staff. It draws on that portion of the game rather than reproducing the full game’s plot.

Adaptation does not establish game continuity

The episode uses Sifu’s premise and imagery, but the available sources do not establish it as a canonical continuation of the game’s story. It is more precise to call it an adaptation or reimagining than a sequel.

Gurei - PlayStation 5
  • You are free to pick your fights against the Kami in any order. The game features a dynamic difficulty system where each enemy strength is defined by the player’s chosen path. This means that the very same Kami fought at the very beginning could also be the final boss in a different route. Hope to never leave the one you struggle most to fight last!
  • Besides sword attacks, dodges, head stomps and other basic abilities, Rei will learn a completely new skill for each defeated Kami. Those will provide further depth to your combat arsenal, be it a stronger dash, a weapon that can execute enemies, the ability to heal and many more!
  • Player choice is the ultimate power. Taking into account the vastly distinct enemies’ patterns and unique skills granted upon each victory, you will be able to decide how to approach every challenge. It won’t be easy either way, but you can always go back and try something different.
  • Gurei is a game about fighting strong enemies, but that’s not all. The Kami inhabit a surreal castle located between the human and spirit worlds. After each victory, Rei comes closer to the realm of spirits, starting to encounter peculiar characters from Japanese mythology. These creatures will add novelty and strangeness to your journey, providing commentary, unique animations, side objectives and obscure secrets.
  • You will get to know the different Kami quite well. When Rei defeats them, she absorbs their power and their personality. The defeated Kami will be carried around wherever Rei goes, and they’ll surely have stuff to talk about. Sometimes their remarks will be useful information that builds the player’s understanding of the lore and the game mechanics, but sometimes they will be... not so helpful, to put it briefly. Good luck!

How was Sifu’s martial-arts performance developed?

Sloclap’s official behind-the-scenes account describes working with kung-fu master Benjamin Colussi on combat-design workshops, motion-capture sessions, and cultural-authenticity reviews. That offers context for the game’s martial-arts production, but it does not establish a single prescribed cultural meaning for any particular movement in the episode.
