Seasmoke’s new rider is Addam of Hull. The dragon chooses him at the end of season 2, episode 6, and episode 7 confirms the bond. Addam is not a Targaryen: he is a Velaryon-associated dragonseed whose success expands Rhaenyra’s search for riders beyond the royal family.

Spoilers: This explanation covers House of the Dragon through season 2, episode 7, “The Red Sowing,” plus major spoilers from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.

Seasmoke’s new rider is Addam of Hull, played by Clinton Liberty. The dragon chooses Addam near the end of season 2, episode 6, “Smallfolk,” and episode 7 confirms the bond when Rhaenyra finds Addam riding Seasmoke.

Addam is not secretly a Targaryen. He is a low-born man connected to House Velaryon and, as the series strongly establishes, one of Corlys Velaryon’s illegitimate sons. His success matters because it proves that a dragonrider does not have to belong directly to the royal Targaryen line. It also gives Rhaenyra another dragon for the civil war and encourages her far more dangerous search for new riders.

How does Seasmoke choose Addam?

Rhaenyra first tries to find a replacement rider for Seasmoke after the dragon has been left without one. She considers Ser Steffon Darklyn, whose Targaryen ancestry makes him appear to be a promising candidate. The attempt ends when Seasmoke burns Steffon.

Seasmoke then appears near Driftmark and begins pursuing Addam through the woods and along the coast. Addam is frightened and clearly unprepared for the encounter. He is not a trained dragonrider attempting a formal claim, nor is he presented as someone who has been plotting to obtain a dragon. The sequence instead makes Seasmoke the active party: the dragon seeks Addam out and accepts him.

That presentation is important. The show does not depict Addam overpowering Seasmoke or winning the dragon through a particular ritual. It frames the bond as a matter of compatibility and the dragon’s decision. By episode 7, the practical result is unmistakable: Addam is Seasmoke’s rider, and he pledges himself to Rhaenyra’s cause.

Why does Seasmoke choose Addam?

The series does not provide a complete biological, magical, or psychological rule for dragon-rider compatibility. The strongest reading combines several facts and themes, but they should not be treated as a confirmed explanation spoken by the characters.

Addam has Valyrian-associated blood

Addam is associated with House Velaryon, an ancient Valyrian house. By this point in the story, the show has made his connection to Corlys clear enough to establish him and his brother, Alyn of Hull, as Corlys’s sons, although their social status and formal position remain complicated.

That makes Addam a plausible dragonseed: someone of low social birth who may possess Valyrian ancestry and therefore may be capable of bonding with a dragon. His blood gives the choice a credible foundation, but it does not mean he is a Targaryen.

He is connected to Seasmoke’s former rider

Addam is also linked to Laenor Velaryon through their shared connection to Corlys. That creates an obvious parallel: Seasmoke’s former rider and new rider belong to the same extended family in the television continuity.

It is reasonable to view that relationship as part of the adaptation’s explanation for why Seasmoke accepts Addam. However, the show has not explicitly said that Seasmoke chooses Addam because he resembles Laenor, carries a particular inherited trait, or is Laenor’s half-brother. Those are interpretations, not established dragon lore.

Seasmoke is looking for a compatible rider

The immediate contrast is between Steffon and Addam. Steffon has a more obvious connection to Targaryen ancestry, yet Seasmoke rejects him violently. Addam, who is not seeking royal status and has no established training as a dragonrider, is the person Seasmoke pursues.

The sequence therefore suggests that ancestry may be necessary or relevant, but it is not sufficient by itself. A candidate can possess the expected bloodline and still fail. The dragon’s own temperament and judgment remain decisive.

Addam represents worth beyond rank

There is also a thematic reason for the choice. Addam is practical, observant, and brave, but he is not introduced as a court politician or an aristocrat expecting power. Seasmoke choosing him challenges the assumption that noble birth automatically makes someone more worthy of command.

This is a narrative interpretation rather than a stated rule of dragon psychology. The show uses Addam’s elevation to contrast inherited privilege with demonstrated character: a shipyard worker can become a dragonrider while a knight with the right ancestry can be rejected.

The safest summary is that Seasmoke chooses Addam because the show presents them as compatible. Addam’s Velaryon blood and connection to Laenor make the choice plausible, while the series deliberately leaves the precise mechanics of that compatibility unexplained.

Is Addam a Targaryen?

No. Addam is not presented as a Targaryen. He is a Velaryon-associated dragonseed whose ability to ride Seasmoke demonstrates that direct membership in House Targaryen is not the only route to dragonriding.

House Velaryon is Valyrian, and the series connects Addam to Corlys. Those facts make him a credible dragonrider, but they do not change his family name or turn him into a member of the Targaryen dynasty. Calling him a “secret Targaryen” confuses Valyrian ancestry with Targaryen identity.

His success also changes Rhaenyra’s assumptions. She begins by looking for people with Targaryen ancestry, but Addam’s claim broadens the potential pool. If a low-born Velaryon-connected man can bond with Seasmoke, other dragonseeds may also be possible candidates.

Was Addam replacing Laenor?

In the show, Seasmoke was Laenor Velaryon’s dragon. Laenor escaped Westeros alive at the end of season 1, leaving Seasmoke without an active rider. The television series then treats Seasmoke’s encounter with Addam as the beginning of a new bond.

So the answer is not that Laenor returns to reclaim Seasmoke. By episode 7, Addam is clearly the dragon’s rider.

The show has not provided a detailed explanation of what happened to the previous bond after Laenor’s escape, and it has not confirmed Laenor’s eventual fate. Viewers may have theories about whether Laenor could return or whether his connection to Seasmoke still matters, but those theories should not be presented as established events.

What does Seasmoke choosing Addam mean for Corlys?

Addam’s transformation from shipwright to dragonrider makes Corlys’s unresolved family situation impossible to keep at the margins. Corlys has relied on Addam and Alyn’s skill while avoiding the full public consequences of acknowledging them. Seasmoke turns Addam into a military and political figure overnight.

For Corlys, Addam is now several things at once: a son, a potential heir, and a valuable weapon in the war. The dragon gives Addam status that birth alone did not provide, exposing the limits of the hierarchy that treated him as unofficial.

The brothers’ different paths sharpen the family conflict. Alyn remains associated with ships, the sea, and the practical maritime tradition of House Velaryon. Addam is pulled into the Targaryen civil war through Seasmoke. Episode 7 emphasizes this contrast when Alyn resists the idea of claiming a dragon and identifies himself with “salt and sea.”

What does Addam mean for Rhaenyra’s war effort?

At the simplest level, Seasmoke gives Rhaenyra another combat-ready dragon and a rider who supports the Blacks. But Addam’s symbolic value may be nearly as important as his military value.

His success validates Rhaenyra’s plan to recruit dragonseeds. She can now point to a supposedly low-born man who has claimed a major dragon, suggesting that her cause can draw strength from outside the narrow circle of royal princes and princesses.

That discovery leads to the wider search for riders for unclaimed dragons, including Vermithor and Silverwing. The campaign becomes the “Red Sowing” storyline in episode 7. It is also a warning: Addam’s success does not make the process safe. Dragons remain powerful, dangerous, and unpredictable, and many would-be riders die while attempting to claim them.

In other words, Addam demonstrates both sides of Rhaenyra’s strategy. Dragonseeds could dramatically expand her strength, but recruiting untested people to approach untamed dragons carries an enormous cost.

How does the show’s version differ from Fire & Blood?

The broad outcome is the same in the source material: Addam of Hull becomes Seasmoke’s rider. The television adaptation changes the surrounding family context and gives the bonding sequence more emotional and visual emphasis.

In Fire & Blood, Addam’s parentage is reported through a deliberately uncertain historical account. The book contains competing possibilities involving Laenor and Corlys. The series chooses a clearer family arrangement by presenting Addam and Alyn as Corlys’s sons, even while keeping their social position complicated.

The show also makes Seasmoke’s selection unusually personal. Rather than simply reporting that Addam mounted the dragon, it depicts Seasmoke tracking him down. That staging foregrounds the dragon’s agency and makes the choice understandable even for viewers who have not read the book.

What happens to Addam in the book?

Book spoilers follow.

In Fire & Blood, Addam later receives the name Addam Velaryon after Rhaenyra legitimizes him and Alyn. He becomes an important Black commander, particularly when the loyalty of other dragonseed riders is questioned.

Addam’s position becomes dangerous because the Blacks have reason to doubt some of their new dragonriders. He must prove that his loyalty to Rhaenyra is genuine. His later story culminates in his death while fighting for the Blacks at the second Battle of Tumbleton.

Those are source-material spoilers, not confirmed television spoilers. House of the Dragon has already altered parentage, chronology, characterization, and emphasis, and it may change future events as well. The book establishes what happens in Martin’s historical account; it does not make the same outcome certain on HBO’s show.

The answer in one sentence

Seasmoke chooses Addam of Hull because the series presents him as a compatible, Valyrian-connected dragonseed—not a secret Targaryen—and his bond with the dragon elevates a marginalized Velaryon son, strengthens Rhaenyra, and sets the stage for the dangerous recruitment of more dragonriders.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Seasmoke’s new rider is Addam of Hull. His Velaryon blood makes the bond plausible, but the show emphasizes Seasmoke’s own choice rather than offering a precise rule for dragon-rider compatibility.
