Sean “Diddy” Combs and Kim Porter had a long, on-and-off relationship that began in the mid-1990s, included three children together, and continued as a family connection after their public breakup in 2007. Their story is often reduced to a simple romance timeline, but the documented record shows a more complicated partnership shaped by repeated separations, Combs’s highly public relationship with Jennifer Lopez, co-parenting, and Porter’s independent career.

This timeline separates well-supported facts from uncertain dates and later claims that should not be treated as established evidence.

At a glance

  • Relationship began: The mid-1990s; some secondary accounts commonly cite 1994, but the strongest sources do not establish an exact month or day.
  • Children together: Christian Casey Combs, born in 1998, and twins D’Lila Star and Jessie James, born December 21, 2006.
  • Public breakup: July 10, 2007.
  • Porter’s death: November 15, 2018.
  • Official cause of death: Lobar pneumonia; the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner certified the manner of death as natural.

Combs and Porter were not established as a married couple in the sources reviewed for this timeline. The most accurate descriptions are “former longtime partner,” “on-and-off partner,” and “co-parents.”

Mid-1990s: Meeting and the beginning of an on-and-off relationship

Porter and Combs met when Combs was working as an A&R executive at Uptown Records in the 1990s. In a 2006 Essence cover-story interview, the couple described their relationship as having lasted 12 years on and off.

  • Great work about a great personality of our times

That account supports placing the beginning of the relationship in the mid-1990s. The year 1994 appears in many later summaries, but the strongest primary reporting located for this timeline does not document an exact first date. It is therefore more accurate to say that they became romantically involved in the mid-1990s than to present 1994 as a precisely verified starting point.

Kimberly Antwinette Porter was born in Columbus, Georgia. According to the Television Academy, she graduated from Columbus High School in 1988, moved to Atlanta to pursue modeling, and appeared on the covers of Runway and Essence magazines. Her career was not limited to her connection with Combs; she also worked as an actress later in her career.

1998: The birth of Christian Casey Combs

Porter and Combs welcomed their son, Christian Casey Combs, in 1998. Christian’s birth became an important part of the public history of the relationship because it occurred before one of the most visible periods of instability between Porter and Combs.

A 2007 CBS/AP report described Porter as already being the mother of Combs’s child when Combs began his high-profile relationship with Jennifer Lopez. The report provides the broad sequence of events, but it does not establish every private development often repeated in celebrity timelines.

1999–2001: Combs’s public relationship with Jennifer Lopez

Combs’s relationship with Jennifer Lopez brought his private and family life into the public spotlight. According to CBS/AP’s contemporary reporting, Combs and Lopez’s relationship ended in 2001. Porter later reunited with Combs.

The documented point is the broad overlap: Porter and Combs had a child together while Combs entered a major public relationship with Lopez, and Porter and Combs subsequently resumed their relationship. More detailed accounts of exactly when the couple separated, reunited, or lived together are not consistently supported by the strongest sources, so those private milestones should not be presented as certain.

2002: Child-support litigation was reported

In 2002, Porter took Combs to court seeking an increase in child-support payments, CBS/AP reported. The report said the pair eventually reunited.

This should be described as reported litigation rather than as a complete account of their finances or private negotiations. The available source does not establish all the terms of the dispute, the final legal outcome, or what the proceedings meant for their personal relationship beyond the later-reported reconciliation.

2006: A public reconciliation and the Essence interview

By 2006, Combs and Porter were again presenting themselves publicly as a family. Their Essence cover-story interview offered a rare contemporary discussion of their turbulent history and relationship philosophy.

The article characterized their partnership as a 12-year, on-and-off relationship. Combs acknowledged that he was not ready to marry Porter and made remarks reflecting his resistance to conventional monogamy. Those comments help explain why the relationship cannot accurately be presented as a straightforward path from dating to marriage. The couple’s public appearance also showed that repeated separations had not erased their family connection.

Because the interview was published while they were still together, it is especially useful for documenting how the pair described their relationship at the time. It should not be treated as proof of every private event that occurred before or after the interview.

December 21, 2006: Birth of twins D’Lila and Jessie

Porter gave birth to twin daughters D’Lila Star and Jessie James on December 21, 2006, according to the contemporary CBS/AP report published after the couple’s later split. The twins were the second and third children Porter and Combs had together, joining Christian.

The birth briefly preceded the couple’s public breakup. That timing is one reason later accounts sometimes describe their relationship as ending in different years: the family remained closely connected even after the romantic partnership ended.

July 10, 2007: The public split

On July 10, 2007, Combs’s publicist confirmed that Combs and Porter were no longer together. CBS/AP reported that the announcement came only months after the twins’ birth and after the couple had spoken publicly about their relationship in Essence.

July 2007 is the strongest contemporary date for the relationship’s public ending. Some later entertainment biographies use 2009 as the date of a final breakup, but that convention is not as firmly supported by the contemporary reporting reviewed here. The distinction matters: July 2007 marks the confirmed public split, while a later date may reflect a different interpretation of continued contact, reconciliation rumors, or family ties.

There is no reliable basis for describing the 2007 announcement as the end of all contact. Combs and Porter continued to share children and remained connected through family life.

2008–2017: Co-parenting, family life, and Porter’s career

After the romantic relationship ended publicly, Combs and Porter continued to be associated through their children. ABC News published a 2008 photograph of Combs and Porter with the children and later described their relationship as on and off, with the split occurring shortly after the twins were born.

Porter also had a family connection to Quincy Brown, her son from a previous relationship. The Associated Press later reported that Quincy was largely raised by Combs. That does not make Quincy Combs’s biological son, but it does help explain why Combs and Porter’s connection extended beyond their three shared children.

Porter maintained a career of her own. The Television Academy records her modeling work, while ABC News listed acting appearances including Wicked Wicked Games and Mama, I Want to Sing. Coverage focused heavily on her relationship with Combs, but a complete account should also recognize her work in modeling and entertainment.

November 15, 2018: Kim Porter’s death

Kim Porter was found unresponsive at her residence in Toluca Lake on November 15, 2018, and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s initial notice. At that stage, the cause of death had not yet been determined.

On January 25, 2019, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner announced that Porter had died from lobar pneumonia. The manner of death was certified as natural. That official finding is the controlling source for the cause and manner of death.

Online speculation and later unverified claims should not replace the medical examiner’s conclusion. In particular, claims drawn from a disputed publication should not be presented as evidence of foul play or as a revision of the official finding.

November 2018: Combs’s public tribute

Following Porter’s death, Combs publicly described their bond as “more than best friends” and “more than soulmates,” according to ABC News. These were Combs’s own descriptions of their relationship and should be attributed to him rather than treated as independently verifiable statements about their private life.

The tribute reflected the continuing importance of their family connection. It did not change the documented timeline: the couple had publicly separated in 2007, while remaining linked through their children and extended family.

2023: A musical reference to Porter

Combs and Babyface, featuring John Legend, released a track titled “Kim Porter” on the 2023 album The Love Album: Off The Grid, according to Apple Music. The song is evidence of a later public musical tribute or reference to Porter. It does not, by itself, establish facts about the couple’s private relationship or provide independent evidence for disputed stories about their past.

September–October 2024: The disputed alleged memoir

In September 2024, a short book titled Kim’s Lost Words: A journey for justice, from the other side… was independently published on Amazon and attracted widespread attention. It was described as a bestseller, but Porter’s children—Quincy, Christian, Jessie, and D’Lila—said that their mother did not write the book and called it a complete fabrication.

The Associated Press reported that the book included allegations of physical abuse and sexual coercion. Because the family disputed its authenticity and rejected its attribution to Porter, those claims cannot be used as established evidence of what Porter experienced, believed, or intended to disclose. Amazon later confirmed that the title was no longer available for sale after notifying the publisher of a dispute.

The book is therefore best understood as a 2024 publishing and misinformation controversy, not as a primary source for this relationship timeline. Words such as “purported,” “alleged,” and “disputed” are essential when discussing it. Nothing in the disputed book supersedes the official medical examiner’s finding about Porter’s death, and its claims should not be used to make broader assertions about the relationship.

What is established—and what remains uncertain?

Documented point How to state it accurately

Children They had Christian Casey Combs and twins D’Lila Star and Jessie James together.
Public breakup Combs’s publicist confirmed the split on July 10, 2007.
Later family relationship They remained connected through co-parenting and family life. Quincy Brown, Porter’s son from a prior relationship, was largely raised by Combs, according to AP.

Purported memoir Porter’s children rejected the book’s authenticity, and Amazon removed it after a dispute. Its allegations are not established facts.

The clearest way to understand their story

Combs and Porter’s relationship was neither a continuously stable romance nor a connection that simply disappeared after one breakup. The strongest record describes a long, on-and-off partnership that began in the 1990s, survived repeated separations and public scrutiny, produced three children, and evolved into an enduring family relationship after the July 2007 split.

That distinction is important when evaluating later biographies, social-media claims, and sensational accounts. The dates of some private reconciliations are uncertain, and a purported memoir rejected by Porter’s children cannot be treated as a reliable record. The verifiable timeline rests instead on contemporary reporting, Porter’s and Combs’s 2006 public interview, family and co-parenting coverage, official medical-examiner records, and documented public tributes.

The Bottom Line

The documented story is a long, unstable romantic partnership that became a lasting family connection—not a simple marriage timeline or a fully verified account of every private reconciliation. Combs and Porter publicly split in July 2007, remained connected through their children, and Porter died in 2018 from lobar pneumonia, with the manner certified as natural. Later claims from the disputed alleged memoir should not be presented as fact.
