Showrunner Spencer Hudnut said the ending was reshaped after the late cancellation, compressing a longer story of Jason’s atonement into the final episode.
What happens to Jason in the finale?
The explosion is a misdirect, not Jason’s death. The next scene reveals Emma and Brad’s wedding, and Jason is alive, walking Emma down the aisle. The finale then leaves him with Bravo: he remains inside the wire and deploys with Omar, Drew and the reformed team. TVLine’s finale interview and recap confirms the turn.

Hudnut framed Jason’s emotional ending as movement rather than a cure. In Parade’s interview, he said Jason was “on a path” with Mandy’s help and was “not healed, but he’s open.” The wedding offers a moment of connection and possibility; it does not establish that Jason has resolved his shame or finished his recovery.
Why did the series finale end differently from Hudnut’s original plan?
Hudnut told TVLine that roughly 90% of the season had been written when he learned it would be the last. He said he had only a few acts of the finale left to “land the plane.” In his earlier plan, Jason and Mandy would reach Afghanistan and begin a longer atonement journey, potentially continuing into Season 8. The aired episode compresses that forward-looking arc into a decisive final movement instead.

| Aired series finale | Hudnut’s pre-cancellation plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Jason’s fate | Survives, reconnects with family at Emma’s wedding and stays with Bravo. | Would arrive in Afghanistan with Mandy and begin a longer journey toward atonement. |
| Pace of the character arc | Compressed into the final episode; Jason is open to change, not presented as healed. | Unfold over a longer period, with room for a Season 8 story. |
| Story’s future | Closes the series while leaving Bravo active. | Leaves the team’s next chapter open to continuation. |
Hudnut gave more context in the Collider interview republished by Filmibee: he said cancellation news came about five weeks before production, after much of the season had been completed. Those circumstances explain the compressed ending, but the proposed Season 8 setup was a plan, not an episode that was produced. Filmibee’s republication of the Collider interview also records Hudnut’s account of the finale’s production.
What do Ray, Sonny and Lisa decide?
Ray stays in service
Ray does not retire or join Spenser House. Instead, he accepts the Warfighter Health role, continuing to serve in a different capacity. That choice gives his story a change in direction without making departure from the military the measure of an ending. TVLine’s interview reports his decision.

Sonny gives up his trident as Lisa advances
TVLine reports that Sonny confesses to striking Decker and cedes his trident, clearing the way for Lisa’s promotion. The finale also shows Sonny and Lisa leaving together. His choice carries a professional cost, while Lisa’s advancement marks her own progression rather than simply resolving Sonny’s arc.
What does the finale say about Jason’s shame?
Hudnut connected Jason’s struggle to the moral weight of combat. In TVLine, he said: “We don’t spend a lot of time talking, as a society, about what these guys are actually doing when they’re at war, which is killing, and that it does bring not guilt, but shame.” The distinction matters to his reading of Jason: the character’s pain is tied not only to what happened to him, but also to what he has done as an operator.

Hudnut described the season’s broader aim to Parade this way: “I think this season we wanted to explore something that I don’t think we as a society talk about enough with our men and women in uniform is what they had to do.” Through Jason, the finale brings that theme into family life and the possibility of support. It does not declare that one ceremony or one conversation erases the consequences of war.
Was Drew meant to lead to another SEAL Team story?
Hudnut described Drew as a possible “bridge character” to a younger generation of Bravo, should the series have continued. He also said spin-offs had been discussed, but were not moving forward at the time of the Filmibee publication. That makes Drew a potential handoff within Hudnut’s thinking—not evidence that a sequel, spin-off or Season 8 was commissioned.

Where was the finale filmed?
Hudnut said the episode was filmed partly in Colombia and partly in Los Angeles, and scenes were shot out of order. The wedding was intended to be the final Los Angeles filming day; the helicopter sequence, planned for Colombia, was filmed in Los Angeles. He also described the jungle shoot as difficult because of heat and humidity. These are Hudnut’s production recollections in the Filmibee-republished interview.
