Saturday Night Live turned the March 2025 Signal controversy into a high-school group-chat mix-up: government officials enter a conversation among teenage girls and keep sharing sensitive-sounding information. The sketch, titled “Group Chat,” aired in the March 29, 2025 episode hosted by Mikey Madison.
What happens in SNL’s “Group Chat” cold open?
The sketch sets up a contrast between a casual chat among high-school girls and officials discussing a military operation. TV Insider describes Pete Hegseth entering with an announcement about a Yemen raid, followed by JD Vance and Marco Rubio. TheWrap reports that the officials continue disclosing sensitive-sounding details even as the girls try to tell them they are in the wrong conversation. These are descriptions of the comedy, not transcripts of actual Signal messages.

What real Signal incident did the sketch parody?
In March 2025, The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg appeared to have been mistakenly added to a Signal chat with 18 senior administration officials discussing plans for a strike against Yemen’s Houthis, according to the Associated Press. The sketch borrowed the mistaken-inclusion premise and the subject of Yemen strike planning, then recast the chat as a teen conversation.

AP reported that The Atlantic said they included precise information about weapons packages, targets, and timing. Senior administration officials said no classified information was included. Those competing accounts do not establish an independent classification finding, so the messages should not be described as definitively classified.
