Robert Picardo and Tig Notaro joined as series regulars, reprising The Doctor and Jett Reno; Oded Fehr and Mary Wiseman joined as guest stars, returning as Admiral Vance and Sylvia Tilly.
Which Voyager and Discovery actors joined Starfleet Academy?
The casting announcement brought back one character from Star Trek: Voyager and three from Star Trek: Discovery. Their billing was not equal: Picardo and Notaro were announced as series regulars, while Fehr and Wiseman were guest stars.
| Performer | Returning character | Earlier series | Starfleet Academy status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Robert Picardo | The Doctor | Star Trek: Voyager | Series regular |
| Tig Notaro | Jett Reno | Star Trek: Discovery | Series regular |
| Oded Fehr | Admiral Vance | Star Trek: Discovery | Guest star |

What was announced at the SDCC panel?
Paramount+ made the announcement during its Star Trek Universe panel in Hall H on Saturday, July 27, 2024. The official schedule listed the panel from 1:45 to 3:15 p.m. PT, with Starfleet Academy executive producers and co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau among the scheduled participants. StarTrek.com’s SDCC schedule gives the event details, while Paramount+’s announcement records the casting and billing. The release said production was expected to begin the following month; that was a plan stated at the time, not a current production update.
How did the announcement fit the rest of the cast?
Holly Hunter had already been announced among the cast. The July 2024 release also named Gina Yashere and Paul Giamatti as recurring guest stars. A casting-reaction video shown at the event identified Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané and Zoë Steiner as actors playing cadets.

Those event details differ from the later cast overview. Paramount+’s guide, updated May 12, 2026, lists Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins and Bella Shepard as the five principal cadet performers, with Zoë Steiner among additional cast. That later guide reflects subsequent cast information, not a correction to what the SDCC announcement revealed.

The show follows cadets training at Starfleet Academy as they face a threat to the Federation. Paramount+ places the story in the 32nd century. The four returning characters connect the new cadet-focused series to earlier Star Trek stories, but the 2024 casting release did not specify how much screen time each would receive beyond their regular or guest-star designation.
