The film’s current Disney listing gives it a theatrical release date of December 18, 2026; May 2026 was the original target announced at SDCC.
What did Marvel announce at SDCC 2024?
Marvel Studios made the announcement during its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on July 27, 2024. The film newly revealed as Avengers: Doomsday is often referred to as Avengers 5, but the key announcement was its official title and the next two Avengers films: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Disney’s announcement called Downey’s casting a return to the MCU in a new role.
Is Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom?
Yes. Disney identified Downey as Doctor Doom, also named Victor von Doom on the current Disney film page. His previous MCU role was Tony Stark/Iron Man. D23 said in March 2025 that he had appeared in 10 MCU films as Stark/Iron Man; that figure describes his earlier role, not Doom.
The announcement does not explain whether Doom is a variant, whether the character has an in-story connection to Stark, or why Marvel chose Downey for the role. Those points remain separate from the confirmed casting news.
