Scrubs returns with its familiar trio at the center and a credible new stage for them: former trainees are now doctors and mentors. The first episodes recapture the show’s warmth, silliness and emotional turns, even as the new interns have yet to make the same impression as the veterans. It is a promising, imperfect revival—not a full-season verdict.
What “Season 10” means for the revival
This review uses “Season 10,” the familiar audience shorthand, for the 2026 return. The naming is not consistent: TVLine reports that ABC contractually refers to it as Scrubs (2026) Season 1. The revival premiered on ABC on February 25, 2026; the first two episodes aired back-to-back, with next-day Hulu streaming reported for the U.S. launch. The initial order is nine episodes, according to the Television Academy.
The story brings J.D. (Zach Braff), Turk (Donald Faison) and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) back to Sacred Heart after years of changed circumstances. J.D. is a concierge doctor, while Turk and Elliot have moved into leadership roles, according to the Los Angeles Times. Familiar faces including Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) and Carla (Judy Reyes) also return. The former interns’ new position as mentors gives the comedy a fresh generational dynamic without requiring the old characters to start their careers over.
Why the old trio still carries the show
The revival’s strongest asset is not simply that Braff, Faison and Chalke are back. Their characters have accumulated history, and the new episodes can draw on it. TVLine’s review of the first four episodes argues that J.D.’s growth remains part of the story instead of being wiped away for a reunion. That distinction matters: the jokes and familiar relationships can provide recognition, while changed responsibilities give the characters somewhere new to go.

Braff’s J.D. and Faison’s Turk remain the emotional and comedic center, with Elliot still part of the core friendship. TVLine singles out the more mature J.D. and Turk’s experience of burnout as points where the revival lets its leads change. The result feels more like a continuation of these people’s lives than a simple attempt to recreate their earliest years at Sacred Heart.
The comedy and the emotional turns still belong together
Scrubs has always moved between absurdity and sincerity. TV Guide finds that the revival retains the old show’s goofy warmth and its capacity for sudden, affecting drama. That balance remains its clearest tonal strength: the silliness is part of the characters’ way of coping with a demanding workplace, while the serious moments give their friendships and responsibilities weight.

The show is also trying to make its hospital comedy feel more grounded in present-day working life. The Associated Press reported that creator Bill Lawrence consulted medical residents about how hospital workplaces had changed. That is useful context for the creative approach, not independent confirmation of clinical accuracy. Braff described the ambition in an interview with the AP: “If we’re going to be silly and we’re going to do jokes, I want the medical stuff to be fully accurate. I don’t want anyone to question it.” It is a production goal, rather than proof that every medical detail has been independently assessed.
The new interns are the early weak link
A new group of doctors gives the revival a reason to revisit the teaching-hospital setting, but the rookies do not yet have the same pull as the returning cast. TV Guide found the newcomers less memorable in the first four episodes than the original show’s first-year characters, while TVLine sees them as additions who can develop alongside the established leads rather than replacements for them.

That difference leaves the revival’s future balance unresolved. The veterans have years of characterization and instant chemistry behind them; the new doctors need time and sharper individual identities to feel equally essential. The first episodes make the premise work, but they do not yet prove that the next generation can carry as much of the show’s appeal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A qualified recommendation, not a full-season verdict
The early evidence supports a recommendation for viewers who want more of Scrubs’ central friendship, comic imagination and emotional range. The revival gives the original characters a plausible next chapter and preserves J.D.’s development instead of leaning entirely on nostalgia. Its main shortcoming is the still-blurry new cohort, and its broader success cannot be settled from a partial sample: TVLine and TV Guide each reviewed the first four episodes, while the initial order contains nine.
