Scream 7 brings Neve Campbell back as Sidney Prescott and puts Sidney’s daughter in Ghostface’s sights. That gives the sequel a clear family-centered hook, but the critical response has been harsh. The film’s commercial performance tells a different story: it opened to franchise-best numbers and became the series’ highest-grossing entry, according to Paramount.
What is Scream 7 about?
Sidney Prescott has built a quiet life with her family when a new Ghostface killer appears in her town and targets her daughter. Sidney must confront her past to protect her family. That premise shifts the danger toward the next generation while returning the series to its most familiar survivor.
The 2026 film is rated R and runs 1 hour 54 minutes. Kevin Williamson directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Guy Busick; the story is by James Vanderbilt and Busick. Campbell returns as Sidney, alongside Courteney Cox, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Isabel May, Anna Camp, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, Joel McHale, Mckenna Grace and Michelle Randolph. Paramount’s official film page provides the synopsis and credits.
Is Scream 7 worth watching?
That depends on what you want from the sequel. Sidney’s return and the threat to her daughter supply a direct emotional premise, but the available critical response suggests the execution will frustrate viewers looking for a sharp new spin on the franchise. The Associated Press’ February 26, 2026 review called it “an uninspired bore,” describing a messy mixture of horror and humor aimed at franchise completists while welcoming Campbell’s return.

Rotten Tomatoes’ snapshot accessed October 7, 2026, showed a 30% Tomatometer from 227 reviews and a 73% Popcornmeter from more than 5,000 verified ratings. Its critic consensus called the film “a disappointing creative regression” and referred to its “dull knife” script. Those scores are changing aggregator snapshots, not objective measures of quality; the difference between them indicates that the audience rating in that snapshot was substantially more favorable than the critics’ score.
Does Neve Campbell’s return save the movie?
Campbell’s return is central to the film’s appeal, but it is not enough to erase the reservations in the cited reviews. The AP reviewer welcomed her as Sidney while still judging the movie a bore. That distinction matters: the criticism is not that Sidney is absent, but that her presence does not by itself make the surrounding story and its horror-comedy mix work for that reviewer.

It is also too simple to say Campbell’s return “could not save” a dying franchise. That phrase treats a critical verdict as a commercial one, and the box-office figures do not support the literal claim that the series has lost its audience.
How did Scream 7 perform at the box office?
The opening and later worldwide total point to strong commercial traction despite the mixed reception. The Associated Press reported a studio-estimated domestic opening of $64.1 million on March 1, 2026, which it described as the best domestic opening in the franchise. At that time, the AP reported a 34% Rotten Tomatoes score and a B− CinemaScore; those are dated figures and should not be conflated with the later Rotten Tomatoes snapshot above.

Paramount announced on March 29, 2026, that the film had crossed $200 million worldwide, after opening to $97 million worldwide, and had become the franchise’s highest-grossing installment at that point. Those are studio-reported figures. Taken together, the evidence supports a more precise verdict than “dying”: critics were mostly negative in the cited snapshots, but the film found a large theatrical audience.
