Streamlabs is the closest documented fit for screen recording with chat tools: Streamlabs Desktop supports recording and chat integration, while Streamlabs Cloudbot documents moderation controls. Those capabilities belong to the Streamlabs ecosystem, but the available documentation does not establish that they all appear in one interface or work the same way on every platform or plan. If you only need to record your screen, OBS Studio is a free, open-source option; pair it with moderation tools provided by your streaming platform when you need to manage chat.
What “built-in chat moderation” means here
A screen recorder captures a display, application window, call, or broadcast. Chat moderation is a separate job: identifying or filtering messages, applying rules, and deciding what viewers can post. Some streaming software connects to chat or offers moderation controls; alternatively, a platform such as Twitch can moderate messages independently of the recording software.
That distinction matters when choosing software. A chat panel or integration lets you view messages; it does not, by itself, prove that the software can filter or moderate them. Likewise, moderation tools do not establish that chat is embedded in the resulting recording. The product documentation cited here does not establish automatic chat-overlay recording.

These are documented capabilities, not a comparative performance test. Supported platforms, account connections, and plan limits can change; check the linked vendor documentation for the current details of the workflow you intend to use.

Streamlabs Desktop and Cloudbot: the closest documented match
What the documentation supports
Streamlabs describes Desktop as software for recording and streaming, and describes chat integration for reading messages across streams. Separately, its Cloudbot Mod Tools documentation lists controls for caps, symbols, links, words, paragraphs, emotes, and Zalgo text. The Cloudbot article was last updated July 7, 2026.
That is a meaningful combination for a creator who records a desktop broadcast and also needs moderation controls. But do not infer that installing Desktop automatically enables every Cloudbot control, that all controls apply to all connected services, or that chat will be included in the saved video. Confirm the supported destination, connection steps, plan availability, and recording behavior in the current documentation before relying on a particular setup.

Recording setup
Use Streamlabs’ Streamlabs Desktop setup guide for the current recording configuration steps. Check the resulting recording before an important session: confirm the intended display or window is captured, audio is present, and any chat element you expect in the video is actually recorded. Chat access and video capture are distinct features.
Cloudbot moderation controls
Consult Streamlabs’ Cloudbot Mod Tools guide for the documented categories and configuration details. Rules such as link or word filtering need to match the channel’s context: an overly broad rule can catch useful messages as well as spam. Review how controls behave on the specific platform you use and test them before a public session.

OBS Studio with moderation handled by the platform
OBS Studio is free and open-source software for video recording and livestreaming. Its overview guide describes capture sources that include windows and displays. The cited OBS materials do not establish built-in chat moderation, so treat OBS as the capture tool and configure moderation separately in the destination service.
For Twitch, use Twitch’s moderation tools
Twitch documents AutoMod and message filtering as channel moderation features that screen or hold potentially offensive or inappropriate chat messages. See Twitch’s moderation setup guide for the current channel-side setup. This platform-native route can complement a recorder; it does not make OBS itself a chat-moderation application.

Keep the capture and moderation checks separate
- In OBS, verify that the correct display or application window is captured and that the recording is saved as expected.
- In Twitch, configure the channel’s moderation settings and confirm who can act as a moderator.
- If you want chat visible in the recording, verify that your chosen capture layout actually includes it. The sources cited here do not establish that chat is automatically embedded.
When Talk Studio is a better recording path
Streamlabs Talk Studio has a distinct documented workflow: its support guide describes recording a private call without going live and automatically recording a livestream when you go live. The guide was last updated April 25, 2025. That makes it relevant to call and livestream recording, but it should not be confused with the Streamlabs Desktop setup or treated as evidence that Desktop’s Cloudbot controls are part of the same recording workflow.
Read the Talk Studio recording guide and verify the current account and platform requirements before choosing it. The cited guide establishes recording behavior, not a specific set of chat moderation controls.

Choose by the job you need done
- Choose Streamlabs Desktop and investigate Cloudbot if you want recording and chat integration in the Streamlabs ecosystem, with documented moderation categories available through Cloudbot.
- Choose OBS plus platform tools if you want free, open-source screen capture and are comfortable moderating through Twitch or another destination’s own controls.
- Choose Talk Studio’s workflow if your main need is recording a private call or automatically recording a Talk Studio livestream.
- Test the complete path—capture, audio, chat visibility, moderation, and saved file—before recording something that cannot be repeated.
