Blue Lips is worth hearing if you welcome sharp turns in sound and mood: ScHoolboy Q’s sixth album pairs swagger and humor with reflections on family, memory, trauma and perseverance. Its variety can feel bracing or uneven, but the shifts are part of what distinguishes it from the more straightforward return a listener might expect after CrasH Talk.
What kind of album is Blue Lips?
Released through TDE and Interscope in 2024, Blue Lips arrived five years after CrasH Talk. Universal Music Canada announced it as an 18-track album. Rather than settling into one sound or persona, it moves between accessible, polished passages, soul-inflected production and more abrupt, restless changes.
That movement gives the record its central tension: pleasure and unease sit close together. Q can sound playful or self-assured, then turn toward the weight of family history and the past. Dylan Green’s March 4, 2024 Pitchfork review calls the result “a daring feat that finds the sweet spot between comfort and anguish.” That is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus verdict; it captures the album’s ambition, while the abruptness of its contrasts remains a matter of taste.
Do the shifts make the album compelling or uneven?
The sequencing makes variety an active part of the experience. “Pop,” featuring Rico Nasty, ends abruptly and gives way to what follows rather than easing into a conventional transition. Elsewhere, smoother moments rub against soul loops and passages Green describes as drum-and-bass-like. The changes keep the album from becoming predictable, though listeners who want a consistent groove may find the same restlessness disruptive.

“oHio,” featuring Freddie Gibbs, is the clearest test of whether the approach works. Green describes it as a three-part track that travels from grainy funk to fast synths, then into a lounge-jazz exchange. Its appeal depends on Q keeping the shifts engaging rather than treating them as decoration; the sequence makes it a miniature version of the album’s larger gamble.
How do the personal songs change the picture?
Q’s explanation of the title is distinct from any critical interpretation of the album. In Universal Music Canada’s March 1, 2024 announcement, he said: “BLUE LIPS is about speechlessness — it was made in a period of self-reflection that at first yielded more questions than answers.” He also connected blue with both sadness and open skies, and described the project as being about perseverance through adversity.

That account gives a useful frame, but the songs matter more than a single definition. “Blueslides,” which Green hears as economical writing over piano and trumpet, offers a more restrained counterweight to the album’s flexes and jokes. “Germany ’86” turns toward Q’s absent father and the street life he inherited. These tracks deepen the harder, more playful persona by placing it alongside memory and consequence; they do not erase the contradictions, and the record is more interesting for keeping them in view.

Blue Lips is an adventurous, introspective return whose strongest idea is its refusal to separate comfort from discomfort. Its personal songs give the album emotional depth, while its sudden production changes make listening less predictable. That same refusal to settle may be a drawback if you prefer a unified sound. For listeners open to a record that moves between swagger, vulnerability and surprise, the variety feels like the point rather than a detour.
