Scarlett Johansson alleged that OpenAI’s Sky voice was intentionally made to resemble her after she declined to license her voice. OpenAI denied the allegation and said Sky belonged to another professional actress. The available evidence does not prove that Sky was cloned from Johansson, but the dispute exposed a difficult distinction between literal voice cloning, sound-alike performance, promotional association, and consent.
Scarlett Johansson alleged in May 2024 that OpenAI’s ChatGPT voice, Sky, was made to sound eerily similar to her after she declined Sam Altman’s request to license her voice. She pointed to Altman’s one-word “her” post—an apparent reference to the 2013 film Her, in which Johansson voiced an artificial-intelligence operating system—as suggesting that the resemblance was intentional.
OpenAI denied both parts of the allegation. The company said Sky was not Johansson’s voice, was never intended to resemble it, and belonged to another professional actress. OpenAI paused Sky while it addressed the controversy. Publicly available reporting supports neither the claim that OpenAI definitively cloned Johansson’s voice nor a definitive conclusion about the company’s intent.
What Scarlett Johansson alleged
In a statement released through her representatives on May 20, 2024, Johansson said Altman first approached her in September 2023 about voicing the ChatGPT 4.0 system. She said she declined for personal reasons.

According to Johansson, Altman contacted her again shortly before OpenAI’s GPT-4o demonstration. Before the two sides could resolve the matter, she said, OpenAI released Sky—a voice that she described as “eerily similar” to her own. Johansson said people close to her could not tell the difference between her voice and Sky’s.
She also objected to what she saw as an unmistakable cultural reference. Altman posted “her” around the GPT-4o launch, and Johansson interpreted that as an insinuation that Sky’s resemblance to her was deliberate. That interpretation is part of Johansson’s allegation; it is not an independently established finding of intent.
Johansson said she had retained legal counsel and asked OpenAI for information about how the voice had been created. Her complaint therefore raised questions beyond whether two voices sounded alike: whether a performer’s recognizable vocal identity can be used commercially without consent, and whether existing legal protections are adequate for synthetic media.
How OpenAI responded
OpenAI’s response had two distinct elements:
- Sky was not Johansson’s actual voice. The company denied using a recording or clone of her voice.
- Sky was not intentionally designed to imitate Johansson. OpenAI said the voice belonged to a different professional actress speaking in her natural voice.
The distinction matters. A voice may remind listeners of a celebrity without being produced from that celebrity’s recordings. Separately, a company could select or direct a sound-alike without creating a literal clone. Those scenarios raise different factual, ethical, contractual, and legal questions.

OpenAI also announced that it was pausing Sky. That decision did not amount to an admission that Johansson’s allegation was correct. It showed that the company was reviewing the selection and use of the voice amid the public dispute.
The timeline—and the evidence that complicates the allegation
| Date or period | What is publicly reported |
|---|---|
| June 2023 | Reporting later cited company documents and interviews indicating that a different actress was hired to create the Sky voice. |
| September 2023 | Johansson said Altman approached her about voicing ChatGPT 4.0. She said she declined. |
| Shortly before the GPT-4o demonstration | Johansson said Altman contacted her again, but that OpenAI released Sky before the issue was resolved. |
| May 2024 | OpenAI demonstrated GPT-4o. Sky’s voice drew comparisons to Johansson’s performance as Samantha in Her. |
| May 20, 2024 | Johansson’s representatives released her statement alleging an intentional resemblance and objecting to Altman’s “her” post. |
| After the controversy | OpenAI denied the allegation and paused Sky while it addressed questions about the voice. |
Contemporaneous reporting by The Washington Post said OpenAI supplied documents and recordings indicating that the actress behind Sky had been hired in June 2023—months before Altman contacted Johansson. The report also cited casting directors and the actress’s agent.
That is important counterevidence to the simplest version of the story: that OpenAI created Sky by copying Johansson’s voice after she rejected the offer. But it does not, by itself, settle whether the voice was deliberately chosen or directed because it sounded like her. Nor does the hiring date establish what Altman intended when he posted “her.”
What the dispute does—and does not—establish
| Claim | What the public record supports |
|---|---|
| Sky was Johansson’s literal voice clone. | Not established. OpenAI denied it, and reporting cited evidence that another actress had been hired before Johansson was contacted. |
| Sky sounded similar to Johansson to many listeners. | Yes, that resemblance was widely noticed and was central to the controversy. |
| OpenAI intentionally created a Johansson imitation. | Johansson alleged this; OpenAI denied it. The available evidence does not justify stating it as proven. |
| Altman’s “her” post referred to Johansson. | Johansson said it appeared to do so, because of her role in Her. The post’s intended meaning is not independently established. |
| A court ruled that OpenAI infringed Johansson’s rights. | No such ruling is established by the sources reviewed for this report. |
Why Her made the resemblance so consequential
In Spike Jonze’s 2013 science-fiction romantic drama Her, Johansson voices Samantha, an AI operating system who develops an intimate relationship with Theodore, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Her performance is largely heard rather than seen, making the voice itself central to the character’s identity.

That history gave the Sky controversy a meaning it might not otherwise have had. Listeners were not comparing Sky with an unfamiliar celebrity interview; they were comparing it with one of the most recognizable fictional AI voices in modern film. Altman’s “her” post appeared to reinforce that association, even though its intended meaning remains disputed.
Watch the film referenced in the controversy: Physical editions are available under listings such as “Her (2013) Blu-ray.” The film is relevant here because Johansson voiced Samantha—not because watching it resolves the dispute. Voice clone, sound-alike, or perceived resemblance?
Much of the confusion comes from treating several different technologies and creative decisions as though they were the same thing.
Literal voice cloning
A voice clone generally uses recordings of a person to generate new speech that imitates that person’s vocal characteristics. Establishing a clone allegation would require evidence about the training data, recordings, model development, or production process—not merely a listener’s impression.

A separately hired sound-alike
A company can hire a different performer whose natural voice resembles a public figure’s. It might also select or direct that performer toward a particular sound. That would not necessarily be a technical clone, but intentional imitation could still raise consent, publicity, consumer-confusion, or contractual questions.

Unintentional or culturally reinforced resemblance
Voices can sound alike for ordinary reasons: similar pitch, rhythm, breathiness, pronunciation, pacing, or vocal placement. The association can become stronger when listeners already know that the performer voiced an AI character in a famous film. Similarity is evidence of perception; it is not conclusive evidence of how a voice was made or why it was selected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the episode matters beyond one celebrity dispute
The controversy illustrates a difficult gap in synthetic-media policy. A person’s vocal identity may have commercial and expressive value even when a system does not use an identifiable recording of that person.
Future disputes may turn on several separate questions:
- Was the person’s actual voice, or identifiable source material, used?
- Was a different performer deliberately selected as a sound-alike?
- Was the performer told how the voice would be used, and did the contract cover synthetic or conversational systems?
- Would reasonable users infer that the celebrity endorsed, supplied, or authorized the voice?
- Did promotional language create or amplify that association?
- Which legal remedy applies—contract, publicity rights, false endorsement, copyright, unfair competition, or another theory?
Those issues differ by jurisdiction and by the facts of each production. Legal scholarship increasingly treats voice identity, personality rights, and AI-generated likenesses as emerging areas of law. That debate does not establish that Johansson prevailed in court, that OpenAI admitted wrongdoing, or that one existing legal rule definitively resolves the Sky dispute.

The most accurate conclusion
Johansson alleged that Sky sounded intentionally similar to her and cited Altman’s “her” post as evidence of the association. OpenAI denied that Sky was Johansson’s voice or that it was intended to resemble her, and said another professional actress had been hired. Reporting based on company documents and interviews indicated that the actress had been hired before Altman contacted Johansson.
The public record therefore weighs against calling Sky a proven clone. It does not, however, allow a confident conclusion about the company’s subjective intent or erase the broader consent question. The lasting significance of the episode is the line it exposes between literal voice cloning, sound-alike performance, promotional association, and a performer’s right to control a recognizable vocal identity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did OpenAI clone Scarlett Johansson’s voice?
No. OpenAI denied that Sky was Johansson’s voice or that it was intended to resemble her. Reporting cited documents and interviews indicating that a different actress had been hired in June 2023, before Altman contacted Johansson. That evidence weighs against calling Sky a proven clone, although it does not settle every question about voice selection or intent.

Johansson said Altman contacted her in September 2023 about voicing ChatGPT 4.0, and again shortly before the GPT-4o demonstration. She said she declined the first request and that OpenAI released Sky before the later issue could be resolved.
Why was Altman’s “her” post important?
“Her” appeared to refer to Spike Jonze’s 2013 film Her, in which Johansson voiced Samantha, an AI operating system. Johansson said the post appeared to insinuate that Sky’s resemblance to her was intentional. Altman’s intended meaning has not been independently established.
Did Johansson win a legal case against OpenAI?
The controversy does not establish a court ruling that OpenAI infringed Johansson’s rights. It does raise broader questions about consent, sound-alike performers, publicity and personality rights, consumer confusion, and legal protection for recognizable vocal identities.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Scarlett Johansson’s allegation was that OpenAI made Sky sound like her after she declined to license her voice, with Altman’s “her” post appearing to reinforce the connection. OpenAI denied both intentional imitation and use of her voice, and reporting indicated that another actress had been hired before Johansson was contacted. The evidence does not prove cloning or deliberate copying, but it highlights unresolved questions about consent and synthetic vocal likenesses.
