Miya Cech plays Toph Beifong in Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2, which premiered June 25, 2026 and is now streaming. Netflix says the role was selected from 6,000 hopefuls. The casting was announced in September 2024, when the season was entering production—not as a new announcement.
Who plays Toph in Netflix’s live-action series?
Miya Cech, credited by Netflix as Miyako (Miya Cech), plays Toph Beifong in Season 2. Netflix reported that the casting team considered 6,000 hopefuls for the part; that figure refers to the role’s casting process, not the show’s audience.
Cech described a personal connection to the character’s heritage in a Netflix Tudum profile published June 29, 2026: “I personally am of Chinese and Japanese American descent and I’m so excited to represent my Chinese heritage in Toph Beifong.”
Who is Toph Beifong?
Toph is a blind earthbending master who joins Aang, Katara, and Sokka as Aang searches for an earthbending teacher. In the animated series, she teaches Aang earthbending and uses her fictional earthbending abilities to sense the world around her. Those abilities belong to the character’s fantasy setting; they are not a general description of blindness.

In the animated canon, Toph later develops metalbending and eventually helps train Korra. Those are details from the animated story, not confirmation that every part of her longer arc has appeared in Netflix’s adaptation.
How Cech prepared for the role
Netflix’s June 29, 2026 profile says Cech prepared with six weeks of training alongside blindness consultant Joe Strechay and assistant Cara Lee Hrdlitschka, as well as martial arts and stunt work. Netflix’s earlier 2024 announcement also said Cech would work with a blind producer and consultant. These are details about the production and Cech’s preparation, not a claim that one actor’s experience represents blind people broadly.
