Politics Made Okay was a YouTube explainer series in which federal political reporter Sarah Ison used humour and plain English to make Canberra easier to understand. Created through The West Australian, it was aimed not only at political insiders but also at people who felt lost, overwhelmed or excluded by conventional political coverage. By 2026, biographical sources describe it as a previous project; Ison continues to work as a political journalist and commentator.
Who is Sarah Ison?
When Politics Made Okay was profiled by PerthNow on 27 November 2021, Ison was a 26-year-old federal political reporter for The West Australian, working in Canberra’s press gallery. She had moved from Perth and, by her own account, arrived without much background knowledge of federal politics. Parliament House initially felt intimidating, even as the work of covering it proved exhilarating. Alongside journalism, she had a stand-up comedy career—a combination that shaped the series’ conversational, comic approach. PerthNow’s 2021 profile describes that period; it should not be mistaken for a current job title. A 2026 UNSW event biography identifies her as a senior political reporter and commentator.
What was Politics Made Okay?
It was a YouTube project produced through The West Australian, blending political explanation, current-affairs context and comedy. Its premise was to answer the beginner’s questions—what is going on, who are the players, and why does it matter?—without assuming viewers already knew the language and rituals of Canberra. The 2021 profile also presents the title as wordplay on “PMO,” a common abbreviation for the Prime Minister’s Office; that is a reported explanation rather than a verified formal branding statement.
The show drew on the personalities and odd moments of political life, but the point was not just to collect amusing anecdotes. The intended route was from a recognisable or absurd moment to enough context for a viewer to understand the politics around it.

Why did Ison make it?
Ison’s own experience as a newcomer to federal politics gave her a reason to question the assumptions of ordinary political coverage. Reporting often presumes familiarity with parliamentary roles, party structures, leadership manoeuvres, policy disputes and Canberra shorthand. For a person without that foundation, the news can feel like a conversation already in progress.
She wanted to make that first step less daunting for people who thought politics was confusing, boring or too information-heavy to follow. Her approach treated unfamiliarity not as a failing in the audience, but as a communication problem that an explainer could address.

How did comedy work in the format?
The comic material provided an entry point; Ison’s reporting and explanation were meant to provide the substance. The profile recalled stories involving Bob Katter and crocodiles, and Barnaby Joyce and a hat—colourful political personalities and episodes that could catch a viewer’s attention. The editorial challenge was to use that interest to explain what happened and why it mattered, rather than leave the audience with a punchline in place of context.

That balance has real trade-offs. Humour can make an intimidating subject approachable, but personality-led stories can crowd out policy and institutional consequences. Making several politicians the subject of jokes would not, by itself, prove that a series was non-partisan or that it scrutinised each party equally. The available profile supports an accessible explanatory intention, not a systematic assessment of every episode.

Who was the intended audience?
The series was particularly relevant to people with limited political knowledge, younger voters, viewers overwhelmed by the volume of political news, and migrants unfamiliar with Australia’s system. Ison also connected political decisions with subjects people may already care about—including education, healthcare, the environment, technology and gaming—rather than assuming they identify as political enthusiasts.
Her mother, who moved to Australia from Switzerland, was one personal example of someone for whom the political system could be difficult to navigate. Ison said the content helped explain it. That anecdote illustrates the intended usefulness of the format; it is not evidence of how many viewers it reached or what they learned.

Was it more than political entertainment?
Ison’s stated rationale was civic as well as comic: people need enough understanding of politics to make informed voting choices. She also argued that disengagement can benefit people in power when the public is less likely to scrutinise decisions. That is her interpretation of the stakes, not a measured finding about the series’ effects.

It is therefore more accurate to describe Politics Made Okay as an attempt to make civic information more inviting than to claim it demonstrably changed political engagement.

When the subject was serious
The series was not confined to comic takes on colourful politicians. In December 2021, an episode addressed the Jenkins Review into Commonwealth parliamentary workplaces. Ison discussed her own experiences of inappropriate behaviour and comments in Parliament House. The West Australian reported that the review drew on submissions, interviews and survey responses from 1,723 people and made 28 recommendations; those are figures reported in its coverage, not independent measures of the video’s impact. The episode report shows the format being used for a sensitive institutional issue as well as lighter political material.
That shift in tone matters. Comedy can invite people into a political subject, but discussing workplace misconduct calls for care and seriousness. The example suggests the series could move beyond jokes; it does not remove the need to judge sensitive reporting by the accuracy and care of its treatment.
Does Politics Made Okay still exist?
By 2026, available biographies describe Politics Made Okay as a previous YouTube and podcast project rather than an active series. HerCanberra’s author biography and the UNSW biography support that distinction. They do not establish an exact final episode or prove that every older video has been removed, so the careful answer is that the project appears to be inactive, not that its archive is unavailable.

The idea behind it remains a useful case study in digital political communication: a journalist can use humour to lower the barrier to a complex subject, but the explanation must still carry the weight. Whether that approach works depends on more than making Canberra memorable—it depends on helping viewers understand what decisions mean.
