Natalie Baszile, the Bay Area writer and filmmaker whose debut novel Queen Sugar inspired the television series associated with Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey, has two major projects expanding her examination of family, race, land and community. Her second novel, Friends and Family, was published by Pamela Dorman Books on October 6, 2026, while her feature documentary Harvest, co-directed with her daughter Hyacinth Parker, premiered at the 2026 Tribeca Festival.
Who is Natalie Baszile?
Baszile’s official biography describes her as both a writer and filmmaker. She is a native Californian with Southern roots and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her first novel, Queen Sugar, established her as a fiction writer attentive to Black family life, agriculture and the enduring ties between people and place.
Her work now extends across two forms: a novel set in a Bay Area community and a documentary following Louisiana farmers. Although the projects differ in genre and setting, both focus on people negotiating identity, responsibility and pressures that reach beyond the individual.
What is Baszile’s new novel, Friends and Family, about?
Friends and Family is a 384-page hardcover from Pamela Dorman Books, ISBN 9780593492161. The story takes place in a tight-knit Bay Area enclave and follows Babs and Nora, women whose friendship has lasted a decade through their children.

A friendship tested by a police encounter
Nora is a white mother raising Nathan, her adopted Black son. After police are called when the children are home alone, Nathan undergoes a traumatic encounter. The incident changes the relationship between the two families and exposes disagreements that had previously remained beneath their friendship.
Race, privilege and the meaning of allyship
The novel examines race, identity, privilege, boundaries and the responsibilities of allyship. Nathan finds refuge with Babs’s family, where race and culture are discussed openly. The resulting conflict asks what friendship requires when people do not experience danger, identity or authority in the same way.

The Nelson brothers
The film follows four fourth-generation farmers in Sondheimer, Louisiana: Willie “Bo” Nelson, Willis “Shun” Nelson, Courtney “Chops” Nelson and Adrain “A-Earl” Nelson. Sondheimer has a population of about 200, and the brothers are trying to sustain a farming legacy while taking on a new land lease.
Climate, costs and family livelihood
Their challenges include climate change, rising costs, equipment demands and the wider threat to their livelihoods. Those economic and environmental pressures also create tension among the brothers, so the documentary treats farming as both a business problem and a family question.

Queen Sugar is Baszile’s debut novel. Its central character, Charley Bordelon, is an African American widow and single mother who leaves Los Angeles with her daughter after unexpectedly inheriting an 800-acre sugarcane farm in Louisiana. The book’s family and agricultural setting supplied the source material for the acclaimed television adaptation co-produced by Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey.

Where can you watch Harvest?
Harvest had its world premiere at the 2026 Tribeca Festival, but the official film and festival listings do not establish a current streaming, rental or purchase outlet. Viewers should check the documentary’s official announcements and festival updates for a later release. A premiere screening does not by itself indicate that the film is broadly available online.
