Yes—Samsung’s Onyx is a real commercial cinema LED system capable of up to DCI 4K (4,096 × 2,160) at 120Hz with HDR. That headline describes the platform’s maximum, however, not the frame rate of every film. The actual result depends on the movie, the image media block (IMB) or media server, the selected screen configuration and the theater’s calibration.
Unlike a television, Onyx is a modular direct-view LED wall installed as part of a complete auditorium system. Samsung announced a 14-meter format at CinemaCon 2026, alongside its latest ICD-generation models.
The short technical answer
- Resolution: 4,096 × 2,160, the DCI cinema-4K raster—not consumer UHD’s 3,840 × 2,160.
- Frame rate: up to 4K 120Hz, subject to the IMB/media-server chain and the content.
- HDR: Samsung states peak brightness up to 300 nits (87.6 foot-lamberts), DCI-P3 color and true black levels.
- LED refresh: 3,840Hz. This is the panel-driving refresh rate, not 3,840 frames per second and not the movie’s frame rate.
- Formats: the system supports flat 1.85:1 and scope 2.39:1 presentations.
Samsung describes the latest platform as the first DCI-certified cinema LED display. That historical “first” is Samsung’s claim and should not be confused with an independent comparative test. (Samsung’s 2025 announcement; technical leaflet)
120Hz is a capability, not a promise that every movie is 120fps
A conventional feature film encoded at 24 frames per second remains a 24fps presentation. The screen does not create genuine new movie frames merely because its electronics can accept a 120Hz signal.

Think of the playback chain in three layers:
- Content frame rate: the number of unique frames mastered into the movie or event.
- IMB/media-server output: whether the installed server can decode and send the required 4K, HDR or high-frame-rate signal.
- LED refresh: the frequency at which the wall drives its pixels. Samsung lists 3,840Hz separately from the maximum 4K 120Hz frame rate.
Consequently, “up to 4K 120Hz” is most meaningful for high-frame-rate cinema, live sports, concerts, gaming and other alternative content. HDR playback likewise requires compatible content, configuration and a DCI-HDR-capable playback path.
What HDR looks like on a direct-view LED wall
Projection sends light through a lens and onto a screen. Onyx generates light at the LED pixels themselves. Pixels can be switched off, producing very deep blacks in a dark auditorium, while bright pixels can reach Samsung’s stated 300-nit peak. Samsung compares that figure with conventional cinema brightness as approximately six times brighter; it is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent picture-quality score.
The potential benefits are clear: stronger highlight detail, high contrast and more consistent illumination across the image and seating area. Samsung also claims 100% color volume at peak brightness and an effectively infinite contrast ratio in dark-room conditions. Those are specification or marketing claims, and real results still depend on mastering, metadata, calibration and operating settings. A screening may run below peak brightness, and SDR content will not become HDR simply because it is shown on an HDR-capable wall.

Why replace a projector with LED?
Onyx removes the projector light path, lens and projection surface from the image-forming process. A venue may gain deeper blacks, high peak brightness, less concern about projector focus and lens uniformity, and a modular wall that can be scaled to different screen sizes. Direct-view LED can also support sports, concerts, gaming and corporate events without treating the cinema screen as a single-purpose movie surface. Samsung presents those uses as opportunities for additional programming and revenue, but a venue must validate the business case itself.
These are platform advantages, not a guarantee that every Onyx auditorium will look better in every condition. A well-designed RGB-laser projection system may remain the more practical choice where the existing booth, screen and infrastructure are serviceable.
Installation is an auditorium project, not a screen swap
Onyx uses LED modules and cabinets, control electronics, mounting hardware, power distribution, cooling, calibration and a professional cinema playback chain. Samsung lists rear serviceability, so the design must provide access behind the wall for module replacement and maintenance.

Before approving a quote, an operator should confirm:
- wall loading, cabinet mounting and structural engineering;
- electrical capacity, heat removal and ventilation;
- rear service clearance and spare-module strategy;
- calibration procedures, replacement times and service response;
- the exact IMB/media-server model and support for DCI-HDR, HFR, 4K and the desired frame rates;
- warranty-extension terms, since “up to 10 years” is not necessarily a standard warranty in every market.
Samsung’s U.S. business pages list Onyx model families such as IC025D/P2.5 and IC033D/P3.3. They are quote-led commercial products, not living-room televisions. What a verified installation tells us
Samsung identifies Trilith Cinemas in Fayetteville, Georgia, as the first U.S. venue for the latest ICD-generation Onyx. The site has five Onyx auditoriums using 5-meter, 6.4-meter and 14-meter configurations. Samsung says the installation uses GDC’s DCI-certified SR-5520 HDR/HFR media server and reaches up to 4K 96Hz in that venue.

That 96Hz example is an important qualification: the platform headline is up to 120Hz, while a real installation may operate at a lower maximum because of its server, configuration or content. Potentially poor fit: small cinemas seeking a low-cost projector replacement, auditoriums without rear access or sufficient power, venues showing almost exclusively ordinary 24fps SDR films, and consumers expecting a retail-priced television.

The correct comparison is total cost of ownership: LED cabinets plus media server, structure, electrical and thermal work, installation, calibration, spares, service and downtime, measured against a new laser-projection system and the value of the existing auditorium infrastructure. Common misunderstandings
- “The movie is advertised on a 120Hz screen, so it must be 120fps.” Not unless the content and playback chain provide 120 unique frames per second.
- “3,840Hz means 3,840fps.” No. It is the LED refresh specification.
- “300 nits means every scene is shown at 300 nits.” No. It is a stated peak capability.
- “LED has no maintenance.” It eliminates projector-specific maintenance but still needs module service, calibration and electronics support.
- “Every 4K Onyx screen uses the same raster and cabinet count.” Screen size, pitch, active area and scaling vary by installation.
Bottom line
Samsung Onyx is a genuine cinema LED platform with credible stated support for DCI 4K, HDR and up to 120Hz. Its strongest advantages are direct-view contrast, high peak brightness, scalable installation and flexibility for non-film events. The headline should be read as a maximum system capability—not a promise that every film is 120fps, every scene is peak HDR, or every venue will receive identical performance. For operators, the decision turns on content mix, auditorium infrastructure, compatible media servers and the complete installed cost.
