Sam Song Li saw a personal connection in Bruce Sun, the aspiring improv performer he plays in Netflix’s The Brothers Sun. Both were raised by single mothers in San Gabriel, and both faced a pull between their own interests and a parent’s hopes for their studies. That overlap informs Li’s portrayal, but Bruce’s story is fictional: the series places his ambitions inside a Taiwanese American family drama that mixes crime, action and comedy.
Who is Sam Song Li in The Brothers Sun?
Li plays Bruce Sun, the younger of two brothers. Bruce has grown up in Southern California without knowing the full truth about his family’s criminal business. When his older brother Charles arrives from Taipei to protect their mother and Bruce, the life Bruce thought he knew is upended.

Netflix lists The Brothers Sun as an eight-episode, TV-MA action series released in 2024. Created by Byron Wu and Brad Falchuk, it stars Michelle Yeoh, Justin Chien and Sam Song Li. Netflix’s official title listing provides current viewing information; availability may vary by region.
Why did Li feel close to Bruce’s story?
In a January 2024 interview with Forbes, Li said he felt close to the material when he found the casting call. “I was raised by a single mom. I was doing improv at the time. I felt really close with the material,” he said.

Netflix Tudum’s cast feature reports that Li grew up in San Gabriel’s 626 area and studied a subject his mother wanted him to pursue, despite having other interests. TV Guide likewise connects Li’s early pursuit of performing arts with Bruce’s secret improv lessons and medical studies. These are parallels Li and the publications describe, not evidence that the actor and fictional character share identical lives.
Li also described Bruce as both confident and uncertain: he wants things for himself while feeling unsettled by what he does not know. That combination gives the character’s ambition a particular tension. Bruce is not simply choosing a career; he is trying to work out who he is while discovering the family history that has been kept from him.

How does the series approach Asian American identity?
The show grounds its family story in a specific Taiwanese American context rather than treating “Asian American” as one uniform experience. Netflix Tudum reports that all eight episodes were written by an all-Asian writers’ room plus Brad Falchuk, and that cast members contributed Taiwanese slang. The feature describes the Taiwanese American immigrant family as a guiding element for the creative team.
Co-creator Byron Wu told Tudum that the intention was to reach beyond one community: “It was really important for us to be able to speak to not just a Taiwanese American or Chinese American experience, but [to] an Asian American experience, that everyone in the room could feel the same feelings and then have that same sense of understanding.” Co-creator and showrunner Brad Falchuk similarly described the characters’ emotional conflicts as universal.

Li offered a view of the show’s tone in Forbes: “It is heavily Asian American, but one of the running jokes is churros!” He also pointed to Taco Bell and In-N-Out as examples of intentionally silly cultural crossovers. His comments describe his perspective on the series, not a single response shared by all Asian American viewers.
Family expectations and individual ambition
Bruce’s hidden improv lessons and medical studies make the friction between family expectations and personal aspiration concrete. TV Guide frames the brothers’ conflicts as involving ideas about which choices count as “American” or “Asian.” That is the publication’s interpretation, not a fixed set of cultural rules. The series’ more specific family setting allows those pressures to be explored through one family’s relationships rather than presented as a universal Asian American experience.

For documentary-minded viewers, the distinction between the viewpoints matters: Li speaks about the personal resonance he found in Bruce; the creators describe the show’s intended cultural grounding and wider reach; and critics offer their own readings of what the family conflicts mean. Together, these perspectives illuminate the series without making the actor’s biography stand in for every viewer or community.
