He describes the family’s fear and the support they received, but the account does not name Scarlett’s diagnosis or report her current medical status.
Why the twins arrived early
Mitchell says the twins were due on 28 April but arrived about a month early. While he was training, he was told to get to hospital because one of the babies was not moving. The family faced an emergency caesarean delivery.
Scarlett was born with the umbilical cord wrapped twice around her neck. Mitchell recounts doctors working on her after birth and his and Lyndall’s wait to hear her cry. “For a time, we feared we would lose our little girl,” he writes. He also recalls asking a doctor, “Will she survive?” These are Mitchell’s recollections of the event, not an independent clinical account.
Scarlett’s illness and time in hospital
About a week after the birth, Mitchell says Scarlett began vomiting her feeds and losing weight. The hospital team investigated possible causes, gave her intravenous fluids and gradually restarted feeding in very small amounts. In Mitchell’s account, doctors initially fed her 1 millilitre per hour and increased the amount over time. That is a detail of her care as he remembers it, not general medical guidance.

Mitchell says Scarlett went home more than a month after her birth on a specific protein formula. The PerthNow excerpt does not identify her diagnosis, so it does not establish what caused her symptoms.
How the family managed the crisis
While Scarlett was in hospital, Mitchell and Lyndall were also caring for her twin sister and their young son. Mitchell describes severe sleep loss and the strain of feeling unable to protect his family. He says hospital staff helped them through the period, and that a night nanny and a daytime nanny provided practical support. He particularly notes the demands on Lyndall.
