Sam Kieth, the comic artist who created The Maxx and co-created The Sandman, died on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at 63. His longtime friend Scott Dunbier announced the death on behalf of Kieth’s family. Obituary reports said Kieth had battled Lewy body dementia for several years.
What happened
Kieth was born January 11, 1963, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The family announcement confirmed his death at age 63 and said it followed his reported battle with Lewy body dementia. The illness is reported context, not a separately confirmed medical cause of death.
The announcement reproduced by COMICON stated: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sam Kieth on Sunday March 15, 2026.”
Why Sam Kieth matters to comics
Kieth’s career crossed creator-owned comics, major superhero publishers and visually distinct collaborations. His best-known legacy rests on two very different projects:

The Sandman
Kieth co-created and illustrated The Sandman with writer Neil Gaiman and pencilled its opening five issues. Those early pages established the visual beginning of a series that would continue through many artists and later collected editions, including The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes.
The Maxx
Kieth created The Maxx for Image Comics in 1993. The Comics Beat records the series as running from 1993 to 1998, while DC notes its 1995 animated adaptation for MTV’s Liquid Television. COMICON writer Richard Bruton characterized the comic as a surreal, introspective 35-issue work; that description is critical interpretation rather than a neutral production statistic.

A career beyond the two signature series
Before and between his creator-owned projects, Kieth worked across the comics industry. The Comics Beat identifies early inking work on Mage, Robotech and Fish Police. DC’s career profile also lists work involving Zero Girl, Batman titles, Lobo, Epicurus the Sage and later Sandman collections.

How to read Kieth’s work now
- For Kieth’s own series: start with The Maxx Book 1 or another collected volume. DC’s official talent page lists the series’ collected books.
- For his collaboration with Gaiman: read The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes, which includes the opening material Kieth pencilled.
- For process and visual development: seek out IDW’s The Sam Kieth Sketchbooks.
Memorial wishes and donations
Kieth’s family said there would be no memorial service, “as per Sam’s wishes.” They asked that people make donations in his name instead of sending flowers to the Hero Initiative, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund or Lewy Body Dementia Association. Readers should use each organization’s current official donation page when giving.
