Entertainment Tonight’s behind-the-scenes feature on Sabrina Carpenter and Jenna Ortega’s “Taste” video shows how the performers turned fake injuries and gruesome set-ups into dark comedy. Published August 31, 2024, the clip offers a look at their on-set rapport and the visual planning behind the music video—not a new or separate music video.
What the behind-the-scenes video shows
The Entertainment Tonight feature focuses on the contrast between “Taste”’s grisly fictional action and Carpenter and Ortega laughing together between scenes. It includes glimpses of their movie-makeup transformations and moments when they laugh after serious-looking takes. Entertainment Tonight’s feature was published August 31, 2024.

Rolling Stone reports that the clip also shows sketches mapping out the story’s escalating injuries. One sketch has Carpenter impaled by a white picket fence; another shows Ortega using a voodoo doll to set Carpenter on fire. The concepts help explain the video’s carefully staged, deliberately comic horror rather than suggesting the violence was meant to be realistic.
At the beginning of the clip, Carpenter says, “In the Sabrina Cinematic Universe, women never die. Men, unfortunately, suffer most of the loss.” She follows with, “This video, in particular, it’s almost comical how the women still don’t die.” These are Carpenter’s remarks as transcribed by Rolling Stone.

How “Taste” fits together
The official music video debuted August 23, 2024, the same day Carpenter released her album Short n’ Sweet. Dave Meyers directed it, and Rohan Campbell plays the boyfriend whose relationship with Carpenter’s character draws Ortega’s character into the story.
As Good Morning America summarizes, the two women fight over the boyfriend and repeatedly kill each other in scenes inspired by films including Death Becomes Her and Psycho. The conflict shifts when they realize the ex is the problem; they leave his funeral together.

The film references behind the video
Carpenter has identified Death Becomes Her (1992), the black comedy starring Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn, as an inspiration. In remarks discussed by TheWrap, Carpenter said the video “was inspired by one of my favorite films, and she was a huge fan of the film,” referring to Ortega. The connection is best understood as an influence or homage; the available accounts do not establish that “Taste” is a formal adaptation.
An Art Directors Guild award-presentation document describes the video as “loosely based on” Death Becomes Her and also names Addams Family Values and Psycho among its references. Its design brief calls for a vibrant, playful look: a timeless pastel palette set against darkly comic, gore-filled scenes. The presentation also identifies adapting one location for different scenes as a major production challenge. It is an award-submission document, not an independent review. Why the BTS adds more than outtakes
The sketches connect the finished video’s outrageous injuries to their planning, while the footage of Carpenter and Ortega laughing reveals the lighter working atmosphere behind them. That contrast is central to “Taste”: the violence is staged as colorful, knowingly excessive comedy, not played as straight horror. The Guild presentation says the video was filmed in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, in August 2024, with Meyers directing.
