What the match at Anfield showed
McIlroy and Hatton were both at Anfield for Liverpool’s December 17, 2023 match against Manchester United, a vivid example of two Ryder Cup teammates supporting opposing clubs. Before kickoff, McIlroy told Gary Neville: “I think so. You’re just looking for a spark, right? You’re just looking for something to get the team going.” Golf Monthly reported the exchange and identified McIlroy with United and Hatton with Liverpool. Golf Monthly’s report

Golf Channel’s wider list—not limited to the 2023 Ryder Cup roster—also names Tommy Fleetwood as an Everton supporter, and Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas as Leeds United supporters. Golf Channel
How to read these affiliations
Football allegiances are personal affiliations, not official Ryder Cup facts. The evidence varies: McIlroy’s matchday comment and the Anfield attendance report provide contemporaneous context, while the other examples are publisher-reported affiliations. The cited examples establish a useful snapshot, not a verified list of every 2023 Ryder Cup player.
