Oklahoma Schools Challenged Ryan Walters’ ‘Pornography’ Book Ban

The Oklahoma Supreme Court said local boards have discretion over school-library books under state law, in a case involving two titles in Edmond schools.

Edmond Public Schools challenged state action over two books in its school libraries, and the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled on who had authority to make that decision. The court said state law left school-library book choices to local boards, guided by local community standards; it did not decide whether the books were pornography.

Why Edmond Public Schools challenged the state

Edmond Public Schools, formally Independent School District No. 12, brought its legal challenge amid Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters’s effort to remove books he described as pornography from school libraries. The dispute concerned two books in Edmond schools: Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner and Jeannette Walls’s The Glass Castle.

On February 20, 2024, Walters accused the district of keeping pornography on library shelves. In a statement published by the Oklahoma State Department of Education, he said: “Edmond Public Schools not only allows kids to access porn in schools, they are doubling down to keep pornography on the bookshelves.” That wording was Walters’s characterization of the dispute, not a court finding. What the Oklahoma Supreme Court decided

In its June 11, 2024 opinion in Independent School District No. 12 v. State, the Oklahoma Supreme Court addressed the authority to decide which books belong in local school libraries. It concluded that state statutes give local school boards discretion over those selections, guided by local community standards, and do not establish a state-official supervisory review process for controlling local board decisions. The holding is about statutory authority and local board discretion. It is not a general ruling that the named books are or are not pornography, nor does it invalidate every form of state authority over education. The opinion identifies the two books as part of the Edmond dispute but does not make a broad judgment about their literary merit.

Which books were involved?

  • The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
  • The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

These are the two titles named in the court opinion. Their relevance here is that they were involved in the local library dispute—not that the court issued a general classification of either book.

What Walters said after the ruling

On June 11, 2024, Walters said he was disappointed and described the decision as “made on very narrow grounds.” He also said, “Ambiguity and indecision are never acceptable.” Those statements were his response and assessment of the ruling, not part of the court’s holding. What is known about the case now

The cited sources establish the June 2024 ruling and Walters’s reaction. They do not establish whether later proceedings, rule changes, or new laws altered the dispute’s practical status by October 8, 2026. The decision should therefore be understood as the court’s ruling on the statutory authority issue at that time, not proof that the situation has remained unchanged since.
