Ryan Gosling’s famously flat hand in the La La Land poster has been raised in Lionsgate’s 10th-anniversary revision. The change followed a playful promotional callback: while promoting Project Hail Mary in March 2026, Gosling recreated the pose with Rocky, the puppet co-star, in place of Emma Stone. Those are two separate moments—the Rocky video was a joke about the pose; Lionsgate made the later poster revision.
What was Ryan Gosling’s “La La Hand”?
The original La La Land poster shows Gosling and Emma Stone dancing. Gosling’s hand is flat and his wrist bent, rather than raised as he intended. In an interview excerpt reproduced by the Los Angeles Times, Gosling said he did not know the dance image would become the poster. He later felt the hand pose weakened the image’s energy and gave it the nickname “La La Hand.”
“There’s a moment that haunts me where we’re dancing, Emma [Stone] and I, and I didn’t know this would become the poster for the movie,” he said. He recalled thinking they should have their hands up, then putting his hand flat. “It just killed the energy that way. … I call it La La Hand.”
How did Project Hail Mary and Rocky enter the story?
In March 2026, during promotion for Project Hail Mary, Gosling filmed a playful recreation of the La La Land poster pose with Rocky, the puppet character from the new film, standing in for Stone. Gosling called it his “hail mary attempt to fix my La La Hand” and said Rocky would help him, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The video was a promotional callback, not the studio’s poster redesign. It made the old pose a fresh joke just before Lionsgate’s separate anniversary update.
What changed in the anniversary poster?
For La La Land’s 10th anniversary, Lionsgate issued revised promotional artwork with Gosling’s hand pointed upward, closer to the raised pose he said he had intended. The Guardian reported that Lionsgate executive vice president Justin Manfredi said Gosling approved the change: “We let him know and he approved it.” Euronews also reported Lionsgate’s announcement of the updated anniversary poster.

The revision changes the poster art, not the film itself. The Guardian noted that some fans preferred the original, so whether the new pose improves the composition is a matter of taste rather than an objective correction.
