The Film & Television Industry Alliance’s Production List, updated October 5, 2026, says the pilot is awaiting a Hulu series order. No premiere date has been announced in the sources available.
What is the latest update on the reboot?
The pilot had wrapped filming by June 30, when lead actor Himesh Patel told The Direct that he and co-star Danielle Deadwyler had finished shooting. Production List’s October 5 update subsequently listed the project as in post-production and awaiting a series order. That status comes from an industry production listing, not an announcement from Hulu.
Hulu ordered a pilot in February 2026. The latest reported status does not establish that Hulu has ordered a full season, and no premiere date is reported. In other words, the project has progressed beyond filming, but its future as a series remains undecided.
What is the pilot about?
The official logline, reproduced by TheWrap, says: “Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.” The premise keeps the franchise’s FBI investigations and unexplained cases at its center, while introducing a new pair of agents.

Who is making it, and who is starring?
Ryan Coogler is writing and directing the pilot, with Jennifer Yale as showrunner and executive producer. Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler lead the cast as the two agents. Patel told The Direct: “Needless to say, myself and Danielle Deadwyler are playing completely new characters, and we just wrapped on the pilot. If we get to do more… we’ll see where we go from there.” They are not playing Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.
TheWrap reports that 20th Television is producing the reboot for Hulu’s Onyx Collective. Coogler’s Proximity Media is also involved. Reported executive producers include Yale, Sev Ohanian, Zinzi Coogler and original-series creator Chris Carter.

Will Mulder and Scully return?
Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are not confirmed as part of the pilot by the sources reviewed. In an August 2026 interview, Carter said: “At least Gillian, I think, is going to appear in the Coogler version. And I’m assuming David will too, so you will see Mulder and Scully there.” Those are Carter’s expectations, not a casting announcement.
Carter is attached as an executive producer. He has said he wants to see Coogler’s version before pursuing other continuations, adding, “I don’t want to step in the way of that.” He also described his involvement as a blessing rather than a matter of permission: “They are free to do with it what they believe. I’m honored that they came to me and asked me, not for my permission, but my blessing.”

How does the project fit into the franchise?
The original The X-Files ran on Fox from 1993 to 2002, returned for seasons in 2016 and 2018, and also spawned feature films released in 1998 and 2008, according to TheWrap. Coogler’s pilot is a new story with new lead characters, rather than a recasting of Mulder and Scully.

The key next step is a decision on whether Hulu orders a series from the pilot. Production List’s October 5, 2026 entry says that order is still pending. Until Hulu announces a series order and release plan, there is no established premiere date or basis to say the reboot is available to stream.
