Ruth and Boaz are central figures in the biblical Book of Ruth, a four-chapter story about grief, loyalty, survival, and the continuation of a family. After Ruth’s husband dies, she leaves Moab with her mother-in-law Naomi and settles in Bethlehem. Ruth gathers grain in Boaz’s field; Boaz protects and assists her; and, after a public negotiation at the town gate, he marries her. Their son, Obed, becomes part of the genealogy leading to David.
Who are Ruth and Boaz?
Ruth is a Moabite woman, the widow of one of Naomi’s sons. Naomi is also widowed, and after the deaths leave both women vulnerable, Ruth chooses to stay with her and travel from Moab to Bethlehem. Her decision binds their fortunes together: Ruth works to help provide for them, while Naomi guides her through the customs and risks of seeking security in a new household.
Boaz is a relative of Naomi’s deceased husband. The story presents him as a landowner who responds to Ruth’s circumstances with practical generosity and protection. Their relationship develops within a family and community setting; the narrative is not simply a modern-style romance.
What happens in the story of Ruth and Boaz?
Ruth gleans in Boaz’s field
During the barley harvest, Ruth asks permission to gather leftover grain. She ends up in a field belonging to Boaz, who has heard of her loyalty to Naomi. He tells his workers not to harass her, allows her to glean among the harvesters, and instructs them to leave extra grain for her. Ruth returns home with food and tells Naomi what happened.

Naomi sends Ruth to seek security
Naomi recognizes Boaz as a relative who may be able to help their family. She advises Ruth to approach him at the threshing floor, where he is working after the harvest. Ruth asks Boaz to take responsibility for her and the family’s situation. Boaz agrees to act, but explains that a closer relative has the prior claim and must be consulted first.
Boaz negotiates at the town gate
Boaz goes to the town gate, summons the closer relative, and gathers elders as witnesses. He explains the matter involving Naomi’s family property and Ruth. The closer relative declines to take it on, so Boaz publicly accepts the responsibility. The account then records Boaz’s marriage to Ruth and the birth of their son, Obed.

The ending connects the family to David
Naomi’s neighbors celebrate Obed’s birth, and the book closes with a genealogy that places him in the line of David. That ending expands the story beyond one household: its account of two widows’ hardship and a community’s response also becomes part of Israel’s royal ancestry. The NABRE introduction also notes the later presentation of Ruth in Matthew’s genealogy.
Why does Ruth glean in Boaz’s field?
Gleaning means gathering grain left behind after the harvesters have passed. Ruth’s work is an immediate means of feeding herself and Naomi, but it also takes place within a recognized social practice. Notes accompanying the NCB text connect gleaning with biblical provisions for leaving harvest remnants for poor people and foreigners. The field therefore brings together Ruth’s labor and vulnerability with Boaz’s particular acts of generosity: he does more than allow her to gather what remains, directing his workers to leave additional grain for her.

What does “kinsman-redeemer” mean in the Book of Ruth?
“Kinsman-redeemer” is a common way of describing Boaz’s role as a relative who takes responsibility in a family matter involving property and Ruth’s future. The story’s final resolution brings together the handling of family land, marriage, and the preservation of a deceased relative’s family line. Study introductions relate these elements to property redemption by a near kinsman and to levirate marriage, a practice associated with preserving a deceased man’s line through a family marriage.
Those connections should not be reduced to the claim that Boaz simply carries out one clear, universally agreed legal procedure. The narrative gives its own sequence of events, while commentators explain how that episode may relate to different customs and obligations. The ESV Global Study Bible introduction, Bible Gateway notes, and the Bible encyclopedia discuss these legal connections; together they indicate interpretive complexity rather than a single settled reconstruction.

Why does the negotiation happen at the town gate?
The gate is the public setting for Boaz’s encounter with the closer relative and the elders. The Bible encyclopedia describes town gates as places of public contact, commerce, and justice. That context helps explain why a family property matter is handled there with witnesses. In the story itself, the essential point is that the closer relative has the opportunity to accept the responsibility, declines, and Boaz then does so publicly.

The book combines intimate household drama with questions of social custom and family continuity. Its dialogue and dramatic construction, noted in the NABRE introduction, keep attention on the decisions and exchanges among Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz. Ruth is not only the recipient of help: she makes a consequential choice to remain with Naomi, works to support them, and directly approaches Boaz. Boaz’s role is shown through specific actions, including protection in the field and his public handling of the family matter.

The genealogy gives the story a wider canonical significance by linking Obed to David. Readers and traditions may emphasize different aspects of that ending—Ruth’s loyalty, the household’s survival, or the Davidic line—without those readings being mutually exclusive.
What is known about the book’s date and historical setting?
The story is set in the time of the judges, but the date when the Book of Ruth took its present form is a separate scholarly question. The Bible encyclopedia discusses arguments about its date and the interval between the events portrayed and the composition of the story. The sources cited here do not settle when it was written or how closely it preserves historical events, so a precise date or definitive claim about historicity would go beyond what they establish.
Where can readers study Ruth further?
The Jewish Publication Society’s Book of Ruth commentary is a dedicated study resource. Its publisher describes coverage of historical, literary, and critical context, along with themes including family, marriage, levirate marriage, redemption, inheritance, hesed, and Shavuot.
