Runway and Lionsgate announced a partnership on September 18, 2024, in what the companies called their first collaboration and contemporary coverage described as the first publicly announced direct partnership between a major Hollywood studio and a generative-video provider. The agreement centered on a customized Runway model built with Lionsgate’s proprietary film and television portfolio for filmmaking support—not on handing an entire feature film to autonomous AI. In June 2026, the relationship expanded: Lionsgate took an equity interest in Runway and the companies announced joint development of new intellectual property, beginning with a planned short-form episodic series.
The 2024 deal in one minute
Runway said it would create and train a model customized to Lionsgate’s proprietary film and television catalog. Lionsgate Studios, filmmakers, directors and other creative personnel were intended users. The model was described as generating cinematic video that could be iterated through Runway’s controllable tools.
The stated goal was augmentation across creative workflows, particularly previsualization, storyboarding and post-production experimentation. The announcement did not promise an entirely AI-generated feature, a replacement for conventional crews, an acquisition of Runway or a consumer licensing arrangement.
Runway’s announcement is available at Runway’s partnership announcement; Lionsgate’s investor-relations release called it a “first-of-its-kind” AI collaboration at Lionsgate’s site.

What “first” meant
The defensible claim is narrow. The companies presented it as the first Runway–Hollywood studio collaboration. TechCrunch characterized it as the first publicly announced direct deal between a major film studio and a generative-AI video-model provider (TechCrunch’s report).
That does not make it the first Hollywood AI experiment or the first AI-related studio discussion. Contemporary reporting said Disney and Paramount had discussed arrangements with generative-AI companies, but no comparable partnership had been publicly announced at that point.
Why Lionsgate’s catalog mattered
A studio-specific model differs from a general-purpose consumer generator. Training or adapting a system with authorized studio material could make its outputs more useful for Lionsgate’s visual language, recurring production needs and internal review process. Lionsgate controls a substantial film and television library that includes recognizable properties such as John Wick, The Hunger Games and Twilight.

For Lionsgate, the commercial argument was that internal generative tools could support more capital-efficient experimentation and help filmmakers explore ideas before committing to expensive production. That is a stated rationale, not a published demonstration of savings.
What filmmakers could use it for
Previsualization
Teams can use generated clips to explore staging, camera movement, lighting or the broad shape of a sequence before principal photography. Such clips are references, not automatically shoot-ready material.

Storyboarding and visual development
Moving images can communicate timing and transitions that static boards cannot. Directors and department heads could iterate on a visual concept, compare alternatives and identify problems earlier.
Post-production experimentation
Generative shots may help test alternate visual treatments or bridge ideas during editing and effects development. Selection, prompting, compositing, continuity checks, editorial work and human approvals remain necessary.

Runway’s later description of the relationship includes previsualization, storyboarding and final-frame production. Later reporting also discussed possible adaptation of material across formats, genres or ratings. A short generated clip is not equivalent to a coherent feature pipeline. Professional production still requires repeatable character and environment control, continuity across cuts, precise acting direction, sound, editorial integration, visual effects, asset management, security and legal clearance.

The announcement arrived during disputes over whether copyrighted works could be used to train models, whether performers’ likenesses and voices could be replicated, and how AI would affect writers, actors, storyboard artists, visual-effects workers and other specialists. Runway was also facing a lawsuit alleging unauthorized training on copyrighted works; that was an allegation reported by TechCrunch, not an established legal finding.
California had recently enacted legislation concerning AI-generated digital replicas in film and television. Those laws formed part of the surrounding policy environment, but the public record does not establish that they governed every element of this agreement.

A studio-controlled catalog does not automatically answer every rights question. Important undisclosed terms include:
- Which titles and assets were included in the model’s training or reference material.
- Whether all relevant rights in performances, likenesses, voices, scripts, music and underlying properties were cleared.
- What approvals are required from actors, directors, writers, guilds and other rights holders.
- Who owns generated outputs and where they may be used, including theatrical, streaming, advertising or merchandising contexts.
- Whether the model can be used outside Lionsgate and whether the arrangement is exclusive.
The public announcements do not resolve those points. They should be treated as contractual questions, not filled in by assumption.
What happened after the announcement
| Date | Development | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| September 18, 2024 | Initial partnership announced | Runway planned a customized model using Lionsgate’s proprietary portfolio for creative and production support. |
| September 2025 | Complications reported by TheWrap | The report cited limits of relying on one model, catalog copyright questions and possible ancillary rights issues involving actors. These were reported claims, not an official corporate admission. |
| June 11, 2026 | Partnership expanded | Lionsgate took an equity interest in Runway; the companies announced a joint program to develop new IP, starting with a planned short-form episodic series. |
The 2026 announcement is documented in Runway’s expansion release. It changes the relationship from a studio-technology experiment into a deeper strategic arrangement involving ownership and co-development.
What the partnership proves—and what it does not
What it indicates
- A major studio was willing to work directly with a generative-video company rather than merely test a public consumer tool.
- Studio-specific models became a serious strategic experiment, with the potential to reflect a controlled catalog and internal workflows.
- The relationship lasted long enough to deepen into an equity investment and planned intellectual-property development.
What it does not establish
- That AI can make a feature film without conventional production, performers, editors or visual-effects teams.
- That using a studio-owned catalog automatically solves performer, copyright, music or underlying-property rights.
- That every workflow will become cheaper; professional review, infrastructure, editing, compositing and clearance still carry costs.
- That Lionsgate has released a feature or series made entirely with the Runway model.
Why a model is only one part of a studio workflow
Even a customized generator has to fit systems for script and asset management, editorial, visual effects, approvals, cybersecurity, rights tracking and archival delivery. A model may produce an impressive image while failing to preserve a character’s face, a prop’s position, physical cause and effect or a camera move across shots. A library can also contain conflicting licenses, talent restrictions or incomplete metadata.
These failure modes explain why a prototype can be valuable without becoming a finished production. The practical test is not whether a clip looks cinematic in isolation, but whether a team can revise it predictably, maintain continuity and clear it for the intended release.
The bottom line
Runway’s Lionsgate agreement was a milestone because it put a generative-video company and a major studio into a direct, catalog-based production partnership. Its substance was a customized tool for supervised filmmaking workflows. The 2026 equity and joint-IP expansion make the experiment more consequential, but neither announcement demonstrates autonomous feature filmmaking or a completed AI-made Lionsgate release.
