Runway 34 is most gripping when its aircraft is in trouble: the cockpit pressure, ominous sound and aerial visuals give the film real momentum. After the emergency, however, the story turns into an investigation and courtroom drama that feels less consistently tense. That shift—not a consensus verdict—is the basis for calling it better airborne than on solid ground.
What is Runway 34 about?
Released on 29 April 2022, Runway 34 is a dramatic thriller directed and produced by Ajay Devgn. Yash Raj Films describes it as inspired by true incidents and follows Captain Vikrant Khanna after a flight emergency leads to official scrutiny of the pilots’ decisions. The distributor’s synopsis names Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh among the principal cast. Yash Raj Films’ film page
The story’s flight travels from Dubai to Kochi. Its real-event connection is described by contemporary coverage as inspiration from, or a loose basis in, a 2015 Doha-to-Kochi flight that ended successfully—not as a documentary reconstruction. The film’s dramatic details should therefore be understood as part of its storytelling, not evidence about exactly what happened in the real incident. Why the flight sequence is the film’s high point
The airborne stretch gives the film its strongest sense of scale and urgency. The aircraft’s emergency creates a clear, immediate question—what will the pilots do?—and the cockpit setting concentrates attention on decisions under pressure. The Indian Express found the pre-interval portion somewhat effective, crediting its computer graphics and ominous score. Hindustan Times likewise highlighted the flight scenes, cockpit decisions, visual effects, camera work and direction.

That technical presentation suits the material: the visuals and sound help make the emergency feel expansive while keeping the action focused on the crew’s choices. The Times of India also praised the film’s visual treatment, effects, sound and production design. Those strengths make the first portion more involving than the inquiry that follows.
Where the investigation loses momentum
After the flight, the film shifts from immediate danger to questions of responsibility. The inquiry gives the story a new framework, but its dialogue and courtroom procedure do not sustain the same pressure as the emergency. The Indian Express judged the second half a dreary civil-aviation courtroom drama; Hindustan Times observed that the trial takes over after the interval and that some supporting characters add little to the investigation. The Times of India also wanted more drama and layering in the trial-led portion.

- Revell Model Kit #85-5810, Skill Level 4, Contains 66-Parts, Recommended for ages 12 and up
- Accurate surface details
- Includes GTD-21 surveillance drone with cart
- Decals with authentic U.S. Air Force markings
- Molded in black and clear. Paint and glue required(not included).
This structural change is the film’s central weakness: an emergency with visible stakes gives way to an extended process of explaining and evaluating decisions. The inquiry may interest viewers drawn to institutional conflict, but those expecting the suspense to keep climbing may find the pace slacken once the aircraft is safely on the ground.
What critics disagree about
The critical split is substantial. The Indian Express rated the film 2.5 out of 5 in 2022, emphasizing the loss of energy in the second half. The Times of India rated it 4 out of 5 that year, giving more weight to the film’s visual craft, sound, production design and performances. Hindustan Times’ review also recognized the technical strengths while noting the trial’s dominance and the limited use of some supporting characters. These are individual reviews, not a single settled judgment.

Is Runway 34 based on a true story?
It is inspired by a real aviation incident, but the sources cited here do not establish the film as a factual account of every event or character. Reviews identify a successful 2015 Doha-to-Kochi flight as the inspiration, while the film’s own story follows a Dubai-to-Kochi flight and dramatizes the subsequent investigation. “Inspired by” is the more accurate description than “a true story” if that phrase implies a verified scene-by-scene reconstruction.

- Expect a change of pace: the second half focuses on investigation and courtroom procedure rather than extending the flight’s action.
- Allow for dramatic license: the real-event connection is inspiration, not confirmation that the film reproduces the actual incident in detail.
