Selected for the International Film Festival Rotterdam’s 2022 Tiger Competition, the film follows 16-year-old Jaivardhana as photography lessons draw him out of a strict Himalayan foothills school and toward Tarini.
How the boarding-school romance develops
Jaivardhana’s school life is defined by discipline. Photography lessons offer a measure of freedom and curiosity, and they introduce him to Tarini. Their tentative romance forms the film’s contemporary story: two teenagers finding connection within the constraints of their surroundings.
The relationship gradually becomes bound up with an ancient tale of lovers, fate and a jealous ruler. The mythic strand does not simply replace the school story; it gives the young couple’s feelings a larger frame. The International Film Festival Rotterdam describes the effect as lending the coming-of-age film “a cosmic dimension.”
How performance traditions bring myth into view
The film shifts between present-day adolescence and mythic storytelling, using performance as part of that transition. The Singapore International Film Festival describes gestures, costumes and masks associated with Kutiyattam, Theyyam and Kathakali traditions. Scroll.in, discussing the film’s use of Theyyam, connects those sequences specifically to Tarini’s anguish. These are descriptions from the respective festival guide and review, rather than a claim that every tradition functions in the same way in the story.

What the Rotterdam selection means
The Cloud Messenger was selected for IFFR 2022’s Tiger Competition. IFFR presents the competition as a platform for emerging filmmakers. Its January 2022 announcement also noted that pandemic restrictions shaped audience and press or industry access for that edition. That is the festival context for the selection, not an indication of where the film can be watched now.

Not the 2024 Korzo stage production
Korzo’s Cloud Messenger is a separate 75-minute interdisciplinary music-and-dance production presented at India Dans Festival in 2024. Korzo says that stage work was inspired by Kalidasa’s Meghaduta. Its schedule, credits and duration should not be confused with Mahajan’s 2022 film, despite the similar title.
