Best overall setup: use the Route 66 Navigation app for historic-route guidance, download its offline data before leaving, and carry a paper Route 66 guide such as a Jerry McClanahan map-guide edition. Use Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Roadtrippers for modern logistics: fuel, lodging, opening hours, route research, and itinerary building.
No single map does every job well. Dedicated Route 66 software is designed to keep you on historic alignments, while general navigation apps are better at current destinations and traffic. Roadtrippers is useful for discovering and arranging stops, but its offline mode does not provide offline search or turn-by-turn directions. A paper map remains the safest backup where mobile coverage, batteries, road closures, or app subscriptions become problems.
What “best” means on a Route 66 trip
Route 66 is not one continuously signed modern highway. Historic alignments pass through six states—Arizona, Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma, California, and Missouri—and many sections now share roads with newer highways, local streets, frontage roads, or county routes. The navigation tool that finds the fastest current drive can therefore be the wrong tool for a traveler trying to follow the historic road.
Choose your primary tool according to the question you need it to answer:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- “Am I still on the historic alignment?” Use a dedicated Route 66 navigation layer.
- “Where can I buy fuel or sleep tonight?” Use a current general-purpose map.
- “Which diners, museums, bridges, and motels should we visit?” Use an itinerary planner and attraction database.
- “What happens if the signal disappears?” Carry downloaded data and a paper map, and understand exactly what each offline mode can do.
The practical answer is a combination, not a single winner.
Quick comparison
| Tool | Historic-route guidance | Offline behavior | Planning and discovery | Useful integration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Route 66 Navigation | Dedicated historic Route 66 directions in both westbound and eastbound directions; Route A and Route B alternatives | Full offline mode with offline maps and voice navigation, after data is downloaded | More than 1,300 attractions with on-screen notifications; saved trips | Apple CarPlay |
| Roadtrippers Premium | General trip-planning routes rather than a guarantee of historic alignment | Downloaded regional maps can be panned and zoomed without service, but cannot search for places or provide directions | Strong for route previews, stops, and itinerary organization | Can launch navigation in Roadtrippers or an installed app such as Google Maps or Waze |
| Google Maps | May label sections as Route 66, but turn-by-turn routing can choose roads based on traffic or road type instead of staying on the historic route | Use as a general destination and logistics tool; historic-route offline behavior is not established by the cited material | Useful for current businesses, fuel, lodging, and addresses | Works as a handoff destination from planners |
| Apple Maps | Same historic-alignment limitation: labels do not make turn-by-turn navigation follow the whole historic route | Use as a general destination and logistics tool; historic-route offline behavior is not established by the cited material | Useful for current destinations and local logistics | Pairs naturally with Apple CarPlay and the dedicated Route 66 app |
| AAA TripTik | General route planning, not dedicated historic-alignment guidance | The cited description covers planning materials rather than offline turn-by-turn navigation | Interactive routes, points of interest, gas stations, TourBooks, and maps | Useful as a logistics and printed-planning resource |
| Federal Highway Administration map | Official historic Route 66 byway context across the six states | Can be saved or printed as a reference map; it is not a turn-by-turn navigation system | Good for understanding the route’s state-by-state extent | Works as a free reference alongside an app |
| Paper Route 66 guide | Can show historic alignments and road history in more detail than a generic navigation app | Always available without signal, batteries, or a subscription | Often includes historical context and named alignments; detail depends on the edition | Useful as a backup and orientation aid |
Why the Route 66 Navigation app is the best primary navigator
It is built for the historic road
The app’s store listing promises turn-by-turn directions for historic Route 66 in both directions. That distinction matters: a road can be geographically close to Route 66 yet still be a modern bypass that skips the old alignment, a town center, or a preserved roadside attraction.
The app also offers Route A and Route B choices. Route A emphasizes famous attractions, while Route B includes selected older or less-known sections. That gives travelers a way to choose between a highlights-focused trip and a more exploratory drive without rebuilding every day manually.
Offline navigation is more than a downloaded picture
The listing describes a full offline mode, and the vendor describes premium offline maps and offline voice navigation. In practical terms, you should be able to continue receiving route guidance through passages without mobile service after the relevant data has been downloaded. The vendor specifically says offline navigation will reliably and safely take travelers through Route 66 passages without a mobile signal.
Download the data before departure, while you have a strong connection and power. Do not treat an app’s ability to display a cached map as proof that it can recalculate a route offline; those are different capabilities.
Attractions are part of the navigation layer
The store listing advertises more than 1,300 attractions along historic Route 66, with on-screen notifications. That is a major advantage over a generic map that may know an address but does not explain why a building, bridge, motel, or roadside stop matters to the route’s history.

CarPlay and saved trips
Apple CarPlay support puts the dedicated guidance on the vehicle display, while saved trips let you prepare sections before driving. Confirm that your phone, vehicle, cable or wireless connection, and app version work together before the trip rather than discovering an integration problem at the first remote stop.
Subscription and changing terms
Historic66.com identifies an annual in-app subscription as necessary for turn-by-turn navigation and identifies Touch Media as the creator. The current price and subscription terms can change, so check the live store listing immediately before purchase. The app first launched in 2018, but launch age is not a guarantee that every feature, map segment, or operating-system requirement remains unchanged.

Why a Route 66 label is not enough
Many sections appear in Google Maps or Apple Maps with Route 66 labels. That helps you recognize the road, but selecting turn-by-turn directions does not force the app to remain on the historic alignment. A general navigation engine can select a route according to traffic, road classification, speed, or current access, bypassing the older road.
A Route 66 Navigation guide puts the limitation plainly: map apps may label the sections, but turn-by-turn navigation will not keep you on Route 66, and generic map apps do not show the attractions along the way.
The right job for general maps
Use Google Maps or Apple Maps after you have chosen the historic route. They are useful for:
- Finding the nearest fuel station, grocery store, pharmacy, or hospital.
- Checking a current address for a motel, museum, or restaurant.
- Comparing arrival times when you intentionally leave the historic alignment.
- Handling a detour caused by construction, weather, flooding, or a closed bridge.
- Sharing a precise destination with another vehicle in your group.
Think of these apps as logistics layers. Let the dedicated Route 66 tool decide which historic road to follow, then use the general map to solve the modern problem at hand.

Where Roadtrippers fits
Best for discovery and itinerary design
Roadtrippers is most useful before the driving day. Its Pro or Premium features allow users to preview routes and launch navigation in Roadtrippers or an installed app such as Google Maps or Waze. That makes it convenient for arranging stops, estimating the shape of a day, and deciding which attractions deserve time.
It is especially helpful for an attraction-first trip: build a list of museums, diners, ghost towns, motels, viewpoints, and towns, then adjust the order until the schedule is realistic.
Its offline limitation is easy to misunderstand
Roadtrippers’ support documentation says that, without service, downloaded offline maps can be panned and zoomed, but users cannot search for places or get directions. Downloading a regional map therefore does not turn Roadtrippers into an offline navigator.
Download the regions you expect to inspect, but hand off the actual driving to a tool that can navigate without a connection. For a historic-route trip, that usually means using Roadtrippers for the plan and Route 66 Navigation for the drive.

AAA TripTik, the official byway map, and paper guides
AAA TripTik for practical logistics
AAA describes TripTik as an interactive planner for routes, points of interest, and gas stations, supported by TourBooks and maps. It is a sensible choice when fuel planning, broad route organization, and printed travel information matter more than historic-alignment fidelity.
It should complement—not replace—a dedicated Route 66 navigator if your goal is to remain on the old road.

The Federal Highway Administration map for authoritative scope
The Federal Highway Administration’s America’s Byways material provides an official Historic Route 66 map and identifies the byway across Arizona, Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma, California, and Missouri. Use it to understand the route’s full geographic span and to check that your intended itinerary covers the states and sections you expect.
It is a reference map, not a voice-guided navigation product. Save a copy or print the relevant pages before leaving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy a Jerry McClanahan guide still matters
The National Historic Route 66 Federation says it commissioned Route 66 artist, historian, and cartographer Jerry McClanahan to produce a map guide that helps travelers find popular historic alignments. A paper guide can show context that a screen hides: the old road’s relationship to a bypass, a former town center, a surviving bridge, or an alignment that requires a deliberate turn.
Check the edition and seller before buying. Road conditions, access rules, and businesses change, so pair the historical detail with a current navigation source.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to prepare a reliable Route 66 navigation setup
- Install the dedicated app and verify coverage. Open the current store listing, confirm your phone’s operating-system compatibility, and review the subscription requirement for turn-by-turn navigation.
- Download offline data on Wi-Fi. Complete the download for the sections you will drive. Open the map with connectivity disabled or in airplane mode to confirm that the expected areas load.
- Choose Route A or Route B. Select Route A when famous attractions are the priority; choose Route B when you want selected older or less-known sections.
- Save each trip or segment. Divide a long journey into manageable days and save the planned sections so you are not rebuilding a route at a remote roadside stop.
- Test voice guidance and CarPlay. Start a short route at home or near your hotel, connect the phone to the vehicle, and confirm that prompts are audible and visible.
- Build the attraction plan separately. Use Roadtrippers, AAA TripTik, or a general map to research fuel, lodging, food, and opening hours. Treat business hours as changeable and verify them close to the visit.
- Download planning maps where useful. If you use Roadtrippers Premium, download the regions you want to inspect, remembering that offline mode allows panning and zooming but not place searches or directions.
- Prepare a paper backup. Carry a current Route 66 guide and a printed or saved official byway map. Mark lodging, fuel, emergency services, and planned overnight towns.
- Check conditions immediately before each driving day. Look for closures, detours, weather, construction, and attraction changes using a connected source. If a historic section is inaccessible, use the general map for the detour while keeping the original alignment marked for later.
Choose the setup that matches your travel style
Historic-route purist
Use Route 66 Navigation as the primary navigator, download its offline data, and carry a McClanahan paper guide. Keep a general map available only for current services and unavoidable detours.
Attraction-first planner
Build the itinerary in Roadtrippers, then drive with Route 66 Navigation. This separates the question “what should we see?” from the question “which historic road gets us there?” and avoids expecting Roadtrippers’ offline maps to provide directions.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Logistics-focused traveler
Use AAA TripTik or a general map for fuel, lodging, and broad route planning. Add the dedicated Route 66 app whenever staying on the historic alignment matters.
Budget traveler
Use the free Federal Highway Administration map and other free planning material, but still download whatever offline data is available and carry paper backup. Free reference maps do not guarantee offline turn-by-turn guidance.
Common failure points and fixes
The app sends you onto a modern bypass
Check whether you accidentally started navigation in a general map rather than the dedicated Route 66 app. Reopen the historic-route segment and compare the road line with your paper guide or official map before continuing.
You have a downloaded map but no directions
This is the expected limitation of Roadtrippers’ offline mode: it supports panning and zooming, not offline place search or directions. Use a navigator with offline voice guidance for the driving leg.
A historic road is closed
Do not follow an old alignment through a closure or unsafe crossing. Use a current connected map to find the detour, note where you left the historic route, and return when access is restored.
An attraction is closed when you arrive
Attraction databases are valuable for discovery but do not guarantee current hours. Check the operator’s latest information before committing a day’s drive, and keep a nearby alternative from your itinerary.
The phone, vehicle, or battery fails
Keep the paper guide in the passenger compartment, not packed in luggage. Carry a charging solution, start each day with offline data available, and write down the next overnight town and key fuel stops.
Bottom line: use a layered system
For most travelers, Route 66 Navigation plus downloaded offline data is the strongest way to stay on historic Route 66. Roadtrippers is the better companion for assembling an attraction-heavy itinerary, while Google Maps, Apple Maps, and AAA TripTik handle current services and general logistics. The Federal Highway Administration map supplies official geographic context, and a Jerry McClanahan guide provides a dependable paper view of historic alignments. Together, those layers are more reliable than asking one generic navigation app to understand the entire road’s history.
