Rory Sykes, 32, was identified by Los Angeles County as a Palisades Fire victim after the January 2025 wildfire. His mother, Shelley Sykes, said she was unable to get him out of his Malibu cottage during the fire.
Rory Sykes, 32, was formally identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner as a victim of the January 2025 Palisades Fire. His mother, Shelley Sykes, said she was unable to get him out of the separate Malibu cottage where he lived as the fire approached.
What has been officially confirmed
Los Angeles County listed Sykes under Medical Examiner case number 2025-00759. The identification release records an approximate location in the 1700 block of Rambla Pacifico Street in Malibu and gives January 12, 2025 as the date death was pronounced.
That official date should not be conflated with the reported emergency at the cottage. Contemporary accounts placed Shelley Sykes’s attempt to reach and save her son during the fire on January 8. The public materials reviewed establish those as different points in the record; they do not establish that the fire first reached the cottage on January 12.

His mother’s account of the evacuation
Shelley Sykes said Rory had cerebral palsy, was blind, and had difficulty walking. She told reporters that his feet had become swollen in the heat and that he could not easily leave the cottage. She said her own broken arm meant she could not lift or move him herself.
According to her account, embers landed on the cottage roof and she tried to use a hose, but no water came out. She said she went to seek help and returned later to find the cottage destroyed. These are the statements of a bereaved mother reported by news outlets, not an official finding assigning fault or a completed reconstruction of the fire response. CBS News/AFP reported her account, as did ABC News Australia.

What is known—and not known—about water and cause of death
Shelley Sykes alleged that water was unavailable when she tried to protect the cottage. That allegation is not the same as a finding that a utility shut off water or caused Rory Sykes’s death. Las Virgenes Municipal Water District said its system remained operational and that it supplied firefighters without interruption. The accounts conflict in the material reviewed, so no conclusion about responsibility is warranted here.
CBS News/AFP and Sky News reported that Shelley Sykes said fire authorities told her Rory died from carbon-monoxide poisoning. The County Medical Examiner identification release located for this case did not publish a cause or manner of death, and the public case detail reviewed did not disclose case-specific findings. Accordingly, carbon-monoxide poisoning should be understood as a statement attributed to his mother—not as a published Medical Examiner ruling.

Remembering Rory Sykes
Sykes was an Australian citizen and a former child performer on the British programme Kiddy Kapers. His mother described him as involved in charity fundraising and motivational speaking; ABC News reported those family-described aspects of his life alongside its coverage of the fire. He should be remembered as more than the circumstances of his death.
