It did reach No. 1 among Paramount+ movies in a December 2025 chart report—but that was a dated ranking, not proof of its current position or total viewership.
What is Roofman about?
Directed by Derek Cianfrance, Roofman stars Channing Tatum as Jeffrey Manchester, a struggling father and former Army Ranger who turns to robbing McDonald’s restaurants by entering through their roofs. The nickname “Roofman” comes from that method. After escaping prison, Manchester secretly lives inside a Charlotte Toys “R” Us. His relationship with Leigh, played by Kirsten Dunst, puts his concealed life under pressure.
Paramount classifies the film as a comedy/drama. The ensemble includes Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, Melonie Diaz, Uzo Aduba, Lily Collias, Jimmy O. Yang and Peter Dinklage. Cianfrance co-wrote the screenplay with Kirt Gunn. Paramount Pictures’ official film page provides the studio synopsis, cast and crew details.
Is the story true?
The movie is based on Manchester’s criminal case, but it is not a complete or strictly factual account of his life. The Associated Press reported that Manchester escaped prison and spent roughly six months secretly living in a Charlotte Toys “R” Us. At the time of his escape, he was serving a 45-year sentence. The film draws on real events while shaping them into a caper and romance.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That sympathetic, often charming presentation is a storytelling choice; it should not be mistaken for a claim that Manchester’s crimes were harmless. The AP’s October 9, 2025 review describes the film as mixing a caper, romance and humane portrait, while noting the distance between its appealing screen protagonist and the more complicated real person.
Did Roofman really take over Paramount+?
In a limited, historical sense. ComicBook.com reported that Roofman arrived on Paramount+ on December 9, 2025, and ranked No. 1 among movies on the service according to FlixPatrol. BGR also reported a multi-day top position in December. Those reports support saying the film briefly led a chart at that time; they do not establish its rank now or how many people watched it.

Later coverage points to interest beyond that initial Paramount+ period. ComingSoon reported on February 23, 2026 that the film had reached a global Prime Video chart position and had ranked on Paramount+ in the United States for six days. SlashFilm discussed its larger audience on Prime Video in March 2026. These are dated platform observations, not confirmation of current availability in any country. No streaming audience total from a primary measurement provider is established in these reports.
Was it ignored in theaters?
“Ignored” is headline shorthand, not a measured audience finding. The available box-office reports give different totals and should not be combined: BGR reported an estimated $32 million worldwide against a $19 million budget in December 2025, while ComicBook.com cited $22.7 million domestically that month. The domestic figure is not a worldwide total. ComingSoon later gave a $34.7 million worldwide estimate against the same reported budget in February 2026. These are secondary-source estimates from different dates, not a single consistent accounting.

The contrast is clearer as a sequence than as a verdict: the film received a modest theatrical profile in the reports cited, then generated chart attention on subscription-streaming services. A chart peak cannot by itself show how large that audience was or whether the movie is still trending.
What kind of movie is it, and what should viewers expect?
The AP lists the film as rated R and gives a runtime of 126 minutes. Its blend of crime caper, romance and character drama may appeal to viewers looking for more than a conventional heist story. The central tension is not only whether Manchester can maintain his hidden life, but how the film asks viewers to respond to a real criminal rendered as an unusually likable protagonist.

For viewers seeking a documentary account, Roofman is a dramatization rather than a documentary or a definitive biography. Its real-case basis gives the plot its premise; its tone and character framing are cinematic choices.
