The Critics Choice Association announced the honor on October 5, 2026; the ceremony is scheduled for November 8 at the Edison Ballroom in New York City.
What award is Ron Howard receiving?
Howard is the announced recipient of the Critics Choice Impact Award. It is a recognition of his contribution to nonfiction filmmaking, not a nomination in one of the ceremony’s competitive documentary categories. The Critics Choice Association says the award honors filmmakers whose work, influence and commitment to nonfiction storytelling have made a significant, lasting impact on the documentary form. The CCA’s October 5 announcement gives its rationale and names Howard as this year’s recipient.
When and where is the ceremony?
The 11th Annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards are scheduled for Sunday, November 8, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. ET at the Edison Ballroom in New York City. These are the CCA’s announced event details as of October 7, 2026; its official event page carries current event information.
Which documentaries are cited in the announcement?
The CCA points to several of Howard’s documentary films: We Feed People, Pavarotti, The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years and Jim Henson Idea Man. The announcement notes that The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years won Best Music Documentary at the inaugural Critics Choice Documentary Awards in 2016, where Howard was also nominated for directing. Pavarotti received three CCDA nominations. Jim Henson Idea Man received five CCDA nominations and won the Emmy for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special.
The release also identifies Avedon, Howard’s portrait of photographer Richard Avedon, as his latest documentary. It says the film premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and was slated for Netflix in fall 2026; that announcement does not establish whether the film is currently available to stream.
Who else is being honored?
Documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim is to receive the Pennebaker Award, formerly called the Critics Choice Lifetime Achievement Award. Named for D. A. Pennebaker, it recognizes a career’s profound and lasting contribution to documentary art. Chris Hegedus, Pennebaker’s widow and filmmaking partner, is scheduled to present the award. Ross Mathews is scheduled to host the gala.
