Sydney Sweeney stars in the Rolling Stones’ “Angry” video, directed by François Rousselet. Its central illusion turns Sunset Boulevard into a moving rock archive: as Sweeney drives through Los Angeles, archival Stones performances appear on giant billboards, matched to the song and blended with footage shot for the video.
Who appears in and directed the “Angry” video?
Sydney Sweeney is the driver at the center of the video, and François Rousselet directed it. The Stones’ appearances come from archival performance footage and imagery, rather than a newly filmed band performance. The video accompanied the band’s 2023 single “Angry,” announced alongside the album Hackney Diamonds. Universal Music Canada announced the single and album on 6 September 2023, with the album scheduled for release on 20 October 2023.

How does the billboard idea work?
The video stages a drive down Sunset Boulevard, where oversized signs seem to show the Rolling Stones performing above the street. The creative premise was to bring the band’s archive to life in a setting associated with Los Angeles rock history. Riff Raff Films describes the idea as combining live archive footage, older videos and album iconography. According to Rolling Stone India’s 12 September 2023 interview with Rousselet, the production recreated nearly 40 billboards by digitally replacing existing advertisements. That is an approximate figure reported in the interview, not an independently audited count.
The concept also nods to the Sunset Strip’s history of rock advertising. Rolling Stone India reported that Rousselet drew inspiration from Robert Landau’s 2016 book Rock ’n’ Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip. The video’s signs evoke that larger visual tradition, while their moving images and precise timing belong to a modern effects-driven production.

How did the archive footage and new scenes come together?
Finding performances that fit the song
The archive was not simply laid over the track at random. Editor Dom Leung described searching through decades of Rolling Stones material for performances that could sync with the music. In Riff Raff’s production notes, he called the process a “painstaking needle in a haystack” and said the irony of Mick Jagger singing “Don’t get angry with me” was not lost on the team.
Matching lyrics and movement
VFX contributor George Brunt said the lyrics were matched to the footage using lip-syncing and AI. That matching helped make the archival performances feel as though they belonged on the billboards in the newly photographed Los Angeles scenes. Brunt also described using 3D lighting to make the inserted images match the plates and reproduce the sheen of classic billboard material.

Photographing the drive, then building the illusion
The production company says the video was shot on 35mm film in Los Angeles. Trade-publication coverage adds that the Sunset Boulevard shoot took one day: Post Magazine reported on 7 September 2023 that a camera was mounted on the hero car while the camera team followed in a truck. The report names Christopher Ripley as director of photography and describes lighting-reference images prepared for the effects work.
Those photographed scenes and the archive imagery had to be brought into visual agreement. Riff Raff’s account and the production reporting describe compositing, rotoscoping and lighting work alongside the footage selection. Brunt noted that the source images came in different resolutions, making it challenging to create a consistent, polished billboard look.

What makes the video’s visual approach distinctive?
The video joins three kinds of imagery: historical Stones performances, a new 35mm shoot following Sweeney through Los Angeles, and digital billboard replacements. Its effect depends on treating the archive not as a separate montage but as part of the street scene. The historic rock-billboard reference supplies the setting; the careful sync and visual effects make the band appear to occupy it.
