Roku’s New Home Screen Ads: What Autoplays, and What You Can Turn Off

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roku’s 2026 Home Screen redesign makes advertising more prominent, and some users report video or audio ads starting without a deliberate play command. But “autoplaying ads” can mean several different things: a Home Screen marquee, a preview inside an app, or an ad in a streaming channel. Roku’s Auto-play video setting can stop some in-app previews; it is not a switch that removes Home Screen ads. Roku says there is no supported way to restore the old Home Screen.

What changed on Roku’s Home Screen?

Roku announced its redesigned Home Screen on May 27, 2026, describing it as its biggest Home Screen update in more than a decade. The U.S. rollout adds discovery features including Top Picks for You, Quick Access, Destinations and Shortcuts, alongside a prominent advertising area. Roku’s announcement presents the redesign as a way to help viewers find content; its advertising materials describe richer video-ad formats and autoplay capabilities.

The most visible change is the marquee ad on the landing screen. Independent coverage described the ad area as persistently visible in the new interface (Ars Technica; MacRumors). A large or prominent ad can feel intrusive even when it is static; that is different from video or sound actually starting automatically.

There is also a clear business incentive for the placement. In its Q1 2026 earnings-call transcript, Roku said tests of the new Home Screen showed increased engagement, satisfaction, monetization and click-through rates when the marquee ad was visible immediately after launch (Roku Q1 2026 transcript). Roku’s 2025 Form 10-K also acknowledges that viewers may dislike the content or frequency of Home Screen ads, potentially affecting the user base and streaming hours (Roku 2025 Form 10-K).

Which kind of autoplay or ad are you seeing?

The right fix depends on where the video or sound begins. Roku’s controls do not govern every ad placement in the same way.

What you see Likely control or explanation
Video preview inside an app or when an app opens Try Settings > Accessibility > Auto-play video > Off on supported devices.
Home Screen marquee or display ad You may be able to hide an individual display ad, but that does not remove the ad slot. Roku does not document a complete Home Screen ad-removal switch.
Ad inside The Roku Channel or another streaming app Roku-level ad preferences may not control ads served by the app. Check that app’s settings and policies.
Screensaver or Roku City ad Ad preferences distinguish screensaver advertising from Home Screen advertising; some placements may not be hideable through the normal controls.
Ad appears at startup, on resume or after idle Reports exist, but the behavior is not established as uniform across Roku models, OS builds or markets. Record the device and software details before deciding it is the same feature.

Roku’s developer documentation describes in-app autoplay as including previews while browsing and video launched when an app opens. The user control is available beginning with Roku OS 12.5.5, according to the documentation. A marquee ad on the Home Screen may not respond to that setting.

Some users have posted reports of Home Screen ads starting with sound or video in the Roku Community. Those accounts show specific experiences, not how often the behavior occurs across all Roku households. The redesign rollout and behavior can also vary by device, software build and market.

How to turn off in-app autoplay

  1. Press Home on the Roku remote.
  2. Open Settings, then select Accessibility.
  3. Select Auto-play video and set it to Off.

This is Roku’s supported control for in-app autoplay experiences. It may stop app previews, but Roku does not describe it as a universal control for Home Screen video ads, ads in partner channels or screensaver advertising. An app may also have its own autoplay setting.

What other ad and Home Screen settings can change

Hide an individual Home Screen display ad

For certain display ads, highlight the ad on the right side of the Home Screen, press the Star button, choose Hide this ad, then press OK. Roku says a replacement ad appears, and it limits how many ads can be hidden in a day. This hides a particular ad on that device; it does not opt out of the advertising space. Details are in Roku’s ad-preferences support page.

Limit sensitive ad categories

Go to Home > Settings > Privacy > Advertising > Sensitive ad content to restrict categories such as alcohol, smoking and gambling; horror; mature or sexual content; medication and supplements; politics; religion and spirituality; and violence. Roku says these controls require Personalized Ads to be enabled, and they limit categories rather than eliminating ads (Roku Support).

Turn off personalized ads

Roku says Personalized Ads can be disabled in the device’s Privacy settings or through a Roku account. Ads can still appear, and may be less relevant; third-party apps may have their own advertising and privacy controls. Roku’s privacy policy explains the distinction. Roku’s advertising privacy information also warns that users may see the same ads more frequently after disabling personalization (Roku Advertising).

Reduce recommendation clutter

Roku documents controls under Settings > Home Screen for hiding recommendation rows and Quick Access, as well as other Home Screen adjustments. Hiding Quick Access causes the App Grid to replace it. These options can reduce clutter, but they do not remove the principal ad placement (Roku Support).

Can you restore the old interface or remove every Roku ad?

No supported rollback is documented. Roku says the redesigned Home Screen is now the standard experience and offers no setting to switch back to the previous layout (Roku Support, updated July 16, 2026). You can change some Home Screen elements and hide certain individual ads, but Roku does not currently offer a supported setting to remove every Home Screen ad or guarantee an ad-free startup.

Turning off Personalized Ads changes targeting, not whether ads appear. Hiding an ad replaces it with another, and Roku’s settings may not govern advertising inside third-party channels. Roku’s placement documentation describes campaigns across The Roku Channel and other apps (Roku Advertising placements).

Is an autoplaying ad a bug?

The greater prominence of Home Screen advertising is an intentional part of the redesign: Roku’s own advertising materials describe autoplay-capable formats, and its earnings-call discussion ties the more immediately visible marquee to monetization and engagement. That does not establish that every report of audio or video starting unexpectedly is intended behavior. A startup or resume issue may be device-specific, app-specific, or related to a rollout or software problem.

If playback traps the interface, the remote stops responding, or the Home Screen fails to load, treat that as troubleshooting rather than an ad-preference issue. Try Settings > System > Power > System restart where available; otherwise look for Settings > System > System restart. Then check Settings > System > Software update > Check now. Menu names can differ between Roku TVs and external players. A restart may address a malfunction, but it does not disable ads.

Should you keep Roku or use another streaming device?

Decide based on the behavior you actually encounter and whether Roku’s remaining customization is enough for you. A static Home Screen ad is a different trade-off from audio that starts on its own, and a preview inside one app may be fixable through autoplay settings while the marquee is not.

  • Keep using Roku if its app access and familiar controls matter more to you than the more prominent Home Screen promotions, or if turning off in-app autoplay and reducing recommendations resolves the main annoyance.
  • Consider an external streaming device if you have a Roku TV but prefer another platform’s interface. You can use an external box as the main streaming interface without replacing the television.
  • Compare interfaces before switching if persistent Home Screen advertising is the deal-breaker. Alternatives have different interfaces, but a different brand is not automatically ad-free; services themselves may also show ads.
  • Be cautious with network-level blocking such as Pi-hole or NextDNS. These are unofficial, require network configuration, may not block all Roku ads, and can break thumbnails, recommendations or other Roku functions. Community reports describe those trade-offs (Reddit Pi-hole discussion); they do not establish a reliable universal blocklist.

Troubleshoot and describe the behavior precisely

Before changing more settings or contacting support, note the details that distinguish an app preview from a Home Screen ad or a device fault:

  • Whether the device is a Roku TV or an external Roku player, including the TV manufacturer if applicable.
  • The Roku OS version and build, found in the system information area of Settings.
  • Where the ad appears: Home Screen, streaming app, The Roku Channel, screensaver or after startup/resume.
  • Whether it is static, moves without sound, plays video, or starts audio; whether playback begins immediately or after a delay.
  • Whether pressing Home stops it and whether the behavior returns after a restart.
  • Whether Auto-play video is off and whether the app has a separate autoplay control.

Those observations help identify the relevant control without assuming every Roku device or reported incident has the same cause.
