Netflix Password-Sharing Rules: What to Do at Home, While Traveling, and in Another Household

Netflix’s official travel code can help when you are away temporarily; someone who lives elsewhere needs an eligible extra-member slot or a separate account.

Netflix accounts are for people who live in one household. If you are away temporarily, Netflix’s official workaround is a short-term access code. If someone lives elsewhere permanently, the supported options are an extra-member slot where eligible or a separate account.

These are the rules Netflix has been enforcing since its paid-sharing rollout began in 2023—not a newly announced 2026 policy. Here is how to tell which situation applies and what to do next.

What Netflix’s password-sharing rule means

Netflix defines an account’s household around the devices and internet connection at the main place where the account is watched. People who live in that home can use their own profiles. A relative or friend does not count as part of the household just because they are family or have a profile: someone who lives at another permanent address needs their own account or an eligible extra-member arrangement. Netflix’s current guidance is in its account-sharing help page and its explanation of what a Netflix Household is.

Netflix says it uses signals including IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to determine a household; it says it does not use GPS to pinpoint a device’s precise location. A plan’s profile count or simultaneous-stream allowance does not authorize permanent viewing from multiple homes. Netflix accounts can have up to five profiles, but profiles are not separate households. Netflix profile guidance explains profile limits.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Netflix publicly described the household restriction and paid-sharing changes in 2023, including in its February 8, 2023 update and May 23, 2023 update. The key distinction remains where a person lives, not whether they are related to the account owner.

Choose the fix that matches your situation

Situation Best next step
You are on a trip or staying somewhere temporarily Request a temporary access code from the household warning screen.
You moved, or your primary home internet changed Update the Netflix Household from a TV connected to the new primary home internet.
You live with the account owner but are blocked Connect to the household Wi-Fi, check signed-in devices, then update the household if needed.
Someone lives permanently in another home Use an extra-member slot if the account and location qualify, or create a separate account.
You need independent billing, multiple profiles, or a different-country account Create a separate account; profile transfer may preserve viewing details.

Use Netflix’s official travel workaround

When Netflix says a TV or device is not part of the household, it may offer temporary verification. This is for travel and temporary use, not a permanent way to share one login across homes. The account owner—or someone who can access the account’s email or phone—must relay the code.

On a TV or streaming device

  1. Open Netflix on the blocked TV or streaming device.
  2. Select I’m Traveling.
  3. Choose Send Email or Send Text.
  4. Open the message sent to the account owner’s email address or phone and retrieve the four-digit code.
  5. Enter the code on the TV and select Next.

On a phone, tablet, or computer

  1. Sign in to Netflix in the app or browser.
  2. Select Watch Temporarily if the household warning appears.
  3. Choose Send Email or Send Text.
  4. Retrieve the four-digit code from the account’s email or phone, enter it, and select Continue to Netflix.

Netflix says temporary codes expire after 15 minutes. The service limits code requests, and repeated incorrect attempts can block a TV from trying again for 24 hours. A non-Kids profile may be required to request a code. See Netflix’s household warning and temporary-access instructions for the current prompts.

  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Reduce interruptions at a second home or during frequent travel

Netflix recommends a brief monthly check-in from the main household: connect a phone, tablet, or computer to the home internet, open Netflix or Netflix.com, and stream for a few seconds. At a second location, repeat the process when needed. Netflix describes this approach for travel and second-home use in its guidance on using Netflix outside your home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A check-in may help maintain access, but it does not make a second permanent residence part of the same household or guarantee uninterrupted use there.

Update the household after a move or home-network change

If the account’s primary viewing location has genuinely changed, update the household from that location—not from a hotel or friend’s home. Use a supported TV connected to the preferred home internet.

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps
  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
  1. Open Netflix on the home TV. Press the remote’s back button; on Apple TV, press Menu.
  2. Open Get Help or Settings.
  3. Select Manage Netflix Household, then Update Netflix Household.
  4. Choose Send Email or Send Text, then open the verification link.
  5. Select Yes, This Was Me, followed by Confirm Update.

The verification link expires after 15 minutes. Netflix’s household-update instructions include the current steps and device guidance. If the update does not work, review the signed-in devices, sign out of devices you do not recognize or use Netflix’s sign-out-of-all-devices option, and try again from the correct home connection.

If you do not watch Netflix on a TV, Netflix says you do not need to establish a household. A phone, tablet, or computer can nevertheless receive a household-related verification prompt, depending on account and device activity.

For someone who lives elsewhere: extra member or separate account

An extra member is Netflix’s paid option for adding someone outside the account owner’s home. The owner pays for the slot and controls adding or removing it; the extra member gets separate sign-in credentials. Availability depends on country, plan, and billing arrangement. Netflix says extra members are generally offered with eligible Standard or Premium plans in many countries, but not with ad-supported plans or some partner-billed and bundled accounts. Check the sharing rules and Extra Members details for account-specific eligibility.

What an extra member gets—and what they do not

  • One profile and one simultaneous viewing device.
  • The video and audio quality associated with the applicable extra-member option and the owner’s plan.
  • Separate login credentials, while the account owner retains control of the slot.
  • Activation in the same country where the account owner created the account.

A separate account is a better fit if the person wants their own payment method, more than one profile, more than one simultaneous stream, or an account registered in another country. A person moving permanently to another country generally needs to cancel and restart Netflix in the new country; see Netflix’s moving guidance.

How to add an extra member

  1. Sign in to the account in a browser and open account or membership management.
  2. Select the option to add or purchase an extra-member slot if Netflix offers it.
  3. Complete the purchase and invite the person by email or phone.
  4. Have the invitee activate the membership in the same country as the account owner.

Labels and availability can vary by country and billing method. If the option is missing, the plan may be ad-supported, Netflix may be billed through an unsupported partner or bundle, or the feature may not be available for that account or country.

Move a profile to a new account

Someone who is leaving a shared account can transfer a profile to a new account. Netflix says the transfer can carry over recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and settings. That offers continuity without continued use of another household’s credentials; details are on the sharing-your-account page.

If a legitimate household member is blocked

A warning does not always mean someone is deliberately sharing outside the home. A different Wi-Fi network, internet provider, external IP address, recent move, new router, or device still signed in elsewhere may prompt verification. Netflix notes these network and device factors in its household-update help.

  1. Confirm the TV or device is connected to the household’s usual Wi-Fi.
  2. Restart the Netflix app or refresh the browser.
  3. If the home’s primary location or network changed, update the household from the home TV.
  4. Review signed-in devices and sign out of unknown or old devices, including a hotel TV or a TV at a former residence.
  5. Repeat the household update from the correct home connection. Follow any troubleshooting or QR-code option Netflix presents.

If the account owner cannot access the email or phone used for verification, recover or update those contact details first. Netflix’s documented alternatives include changing the contact information or creating a new account. Apple TV may not show the usual Troubleshoot this TV option; Netflix recommends checking in through a mobile device or updating the household instead. See the device warning troubleshooting page.

What not to mistake for a workaround

  • A VPN: It is not an official household fix and can complicate catalog access, authentication, or playback.
  • A temporary code: It is a travel-access process with expiry and request limits, not permanent permission for a second home.
  • More profiles or streams: Neither five profiles nor a higher simultaneous-stream limit changes the one-household rule. Netflix explains device and stream limits in its device guidance.
  • Old price figures: Prices and plan availability depend on country and billing channel and can change. Check Netflix’s live plan and account pages rather than relying on older prices; see why a Netflix price may change and how to change a plan.

Some 2026 technology coverage reports that Netflix has asked certain users to associate profiles with unique email addresses. This has not been established here as a universal requirement; treat it as an account-specific prompt unless Netflix documents a broader rule. See reporting by Ars Technica and Tom’s Guide.
