Lee Garlington later described a private relationship with Rock Hudson that began, by his account, in 1962 and ended in 1965. The “true love” story reached Garlington through a posthumous biography, rather than a contemporaneous recording of Hudson saying those words. The available accounts offer a glimpse of their relationship, but do not independently verify every detail.
How Garlington said the relationship began
In a 2015 TV Guide report summarizing his interview with People, Garlington recalled meeting Hudson in 1962 while working as a film extra. According to that account, a friend of Hudson contacted Garlington the following year about meeting him. These dates come from Garlington’s later recollection as reported by TV Guide, rather than independent records reviewed here. TV Guide’s 2015 account

Why they kept it private
Garlington said Hudson did not explicitly ask him to conceal their relationship. He recalled that Hudson expected discretion: “He assumed I would and I did,” Garlington said, as quoted by TV Guide. He described the wider climate bluntly: “Nobody in their right mind came out. It was career suicide. We all pretended to be straight.”
In Garlington’s account, privacy shaped ordinary aspects of the relationship. He recalled overnight visits followed by discreet departures, and attending premieres with female dates. Those are details of his recollection, not independently documented events in the sources available here.

What Garlington said about the breakup and the biography
TV Guide reported that Garlington and Hudson broke up in 1965 and had lost contact by the time Hudson disclosed his AIDS diagnosis in 1985. The same report says Garlington later read in a posthumous biography that Hudson had called him his “true love,” and that reading it moved him. The phrase therefore comes to readers through Garlington’s account of a biographical passage, not an authenticated direct quotation from Hudson.
A 1986 Washington Post article placed a related claim in the context of biographer Sara Davidson’s book, reporting that Davidson said Hudson named Garlington among the people he had really loved. This is a separate layer of reporting about what the biographer said; it does not establish a contemporaneous transcript of Hudson’s words. The Washington Post’s 1986 coverage

What later accounts can—and cannot—establish
In a 2023 Queerty interview, filmmaker Stephen Kijak described Garlington as warm and full of memories, while expressing uncertainty about a familiar claim that Hudson loved only his mother and Garlington: “there’s a famous quote (I don’t know how accurate it is).” That caution matters: the reported relationship and Garlington’s memories do not make every widely repeated formulation about Hudson’s private life certain fact. Queerty’s 2023 interview with Stephen Kijak
The strongest careful account is consequently a limited one: Garlington remembered a relationship beginning in 1962, described the discretion surrounding it, and said a biography later told him Hudson had regarded him as his “true love.” The chronology and intimate details are reported recollections; the wording is not verified here as Hudson’s recorded statement.
