What do the film nomination totals mean?
A film’s total Oscar nominations are not the same as Williams’s individual acting nominations. The Academy’s 1990 ceremony record lists Dead Poets Society with four nominations overall, including Williams for Actor in a Leading Role; the film won Original Screenplay. Its 1992 record lists The Fisher King with five nominations overall, including Williams for Actor in a Leading Role; Mercedes Ruehl won Supporting Actress for the film.
The Academy notes that its names and titles derive from credits and documentation submitted at the time of nomination or award. This list answers which films received Oscar nominations for Williams’s acting, not every film featuring him that may have been nominated in any category, including for voice work.
