Them: The Scare is the second installment of the horror anthology Them, set in Los Angeles in 1991. LAPD Homicide Detective Dawn Reeve investigates a foster-home mother’s murder, then finds the danger reaching into her own family. The season uses a real historical period as dramatic context, but its murder case and supernatural events are fiction—not a docudrama.
What is Them: The Scare about?
Dawn Reeve, an LAPD Homicide Detective, is assigned the gruesome murder of a foster-home mother. As she pursues the case in a city described as being on the edge of chaos, a malevolent presence begins to grip Dawn and her family. The official Prime Video announcement frames the season as a horror story built around that investigation and its consequences at home.

The investigation is the crime-story spine; the threat that grows around Dawn and her family supplies the supernatural horror. The series does not present the fictional case or supernatural events as historical fact.

How does it connect to Them: Covenant?
The Scare is an anthology reset rather than a continuation of the Emory family’s story. Them: Covenant took place in Compton around 1952; the second installment moves the anthology to Los Angeles in 1991 and follows Dawn Reeve. Deborah Ayorinde returns to the series in a different role, not as the same character.
That new setting, story and lead character make The Scare a reasonable starting point for viewers who have not seen Covenant. That is a practical inference from the anthology format, not an official viewing-order rule; the available announcement does not prescribe whether season one should be watched first.

What is the historical context—and what is fictional?
The season is set in Los Angeles after the 1991 assault on Rodney King by LAPD officers. TV Insider describes Dawn as confronting racism and misogyny in her workplace as well as the supernatural threat. That context places the fictional story within a specific period of the city’s history; it does not make Dawn’s case or the season’s supernatural events historical occurrences.
Creator, showrunner and executive producer Little Marvin drew a clear distinction in a TV Insider interview: “We’re not making a docudrama, but we are making a drama that pulls from history.” The distinction matters: the season uses historical context for its drama, rather than claiming to recreate a documented case.

In the official Prime Video release announcement, Marvin described the intention this way: “With THEM: The Scare, we wanted to combine our love of horror with a look at Los Angeles’s rich history and evolution.”

Marvin cited the 1991 films Misery, Cape Fear and The Silence of the Lambs as influences in the TV Insider interview. The season’s Edmund Gaines storyline is one area where those influences come through, according to the feature. These are inspirations the creator identified, not films that The Scare adapts.
