Robin Williams’ former family home at 540 El Camino Del Mar in San Francisco’s Sea Cliff neighborhood sold for a reported $18.1 million, closing January 23, 2025, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The property had first been listed for $25 million.

Where was Robin Williams’ San Francisco home?

The house stands at 540 El Camino Del Mar in Sea Cliff, a coastal neighborhood in northwest San Francisco. Its setting includes views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands, as reported by the Chronicle and SFGATE.

What was the house like?

Built in 1926 in the Italian Renaissance style, the residence is approximately 10,600 square feet across three levels and has six bedrooms, according to the Chronicle. SFGATE identifies Earle B. Bertz as its designer and describes carved ceilings, arched windows and a grand staircase.

The Chronicle’s sale report lists five full bathrooms and three half bathrooms, along with a Japanese-themed bathroom, wine cellar, library, media room, walk-in vault and one-bedroom guest apartment. Room and feature descriptions can differ between listing materials and news accounts; the Chronicle’s figures provide the specific dimensions and bedroom count used here.

Hidden spaces and family touches

Accounts of the property describe secret rooms and passageways created for the children, as well as a topiary dinosaur that rose above the garden walls. SFGATE also described a concealed room that could serve as a safe room, office or meditation space. These are reported features, not details independently verified by a public property inspection.

How Robin Williams’ family made it their home

Robin Williams and his wife, Marsha Garces Williams, bought the house for $3.2 million in 1991, according to the Chronicle’s 2023 account. They renovated it in the early 1990s, reportedly rebuilding from the studs while retaining historic materials. After their divorce in 2010, Marsha retained ownership.

In the Chronicle’s account, Marsha called it “a beautiful, happy house” and recalled “many, many fantastic years of fun and play and joy there.” Listing agent Steven Mavromihalis said the renovation preserved rare building materials from 1926 that are no longer available for modern construction, as quoted in the Chronicle and SFGATE.

From a $25 million listing to the reported sale

The asking price changed over the time the house was marketed. The Chronicle reported an initial $25 million listing; SFGATE reported that the asking price had been reduced to $20 million by late 2024. The Chronicle later reported a $18.1 million sale and a January 23, 2025 closing date, attributing that date to Compass.
