His credits also include directing, producing and documentary narration, so a useful filmography needs to distinguish those roles rather than count every title as an acting appearance. Redford died on September 16, 2025, aged 89.

Robert Redford’s television appearances
Redford worked in television before his major film success. The Television Academy identifies appearances in Tate, Play of the Week, and Dr. Kildare, as well as a later appearance in Dark Winds. These are television acting credits, distinct from the series he produced.
#1 Best Overall
The Television Academy records two Emmy nominations: an acting nomination connected to Premiere, Presented by Fred Astaire (1963), and a documentary/nonfiction special nomination connected to All the President’s Men Revisited (2013). The nomination count is the profile’s reported figure, not a count of every television-related recognition.
Films Robert Redford directed
Redford’s directing credits are a separate part of his filmography. A directing credit does not mean he acted in the film.

This is a selected list of his directing work. The AFI Catalog includes additional director credits; its role filters are the better route for checking a broader directing filmography.
Documentary narration and producing credits
Redford’s screen work extended beyond acting and directing. Documentary-related credits include narration and self appearances, while his production work covered both films and television. Those roles should not be mistaken for cast performances.

- Robert Redford, Will Geer, Delle Bolton, Sydney Pollack
- Documentary-related screen work: titles listed in supplementary filmography records include National Parks Adventure, The Mustangs: America’s Wild Horses, Words from a Bear, Momentum Generation, and Public Trust. The records combine narration, self appearances, and other types of work, so the title alone does not establish Redford’s exact role.
- Produced television series: Iconoclasts, Chicagoland, The American West, and Dark Winds.
- Produced films and specials: The Big Bang, American Epic, Momentum Generation, and Public Trust.
The Television Academy also connects Redford with the documentary special All the President’s Men Revisited. These credits illustrate why a filmography should be read by role category, rather than as a single list of performances.

There is no single definitive all-media total established by the cited filmography sources. The American Film Institute Catalog reported 94 titles in Redford’s filmography when accessed in 2026, but that is a catalog-scoped figure spanning six categories: cast, director, film editor, producer, music, and history. AFI also flags titles outside its feature-film catalog boundary. It should not be described as 94 acting roles, or as a universal total of every film and television credit.

Other databases combine or classify self appearances, narration, production, and acting differently. For a useful count, first decide whether the question means acting appearances, directed films, produced projects, or all listed screen-related work.
Sources and scope
The acting chronology draws on AFI cast entries for earlier films and on Television Academy, Rotten Tomatoes, and Golden Globes profiles for later examples. The directing list reflects titles identified by the Golden Globes profile, with AFI noted for its broader role-based catalog. Television and documentary examples use Television Academy and Rotten Tomatoes listings; those databases do not present identical role categories or claim to provide a universal tally.
Profile figures are database-specific: the Television Academy reports two Emmy nominations, while the Golden Globes profile reports 10 nominations and five wins. These counts describe those organizations’ records, not every award or screen credit.
