Where to watch Robert Redford’s biggest films
The table uses “streaming” in the broad sense of watching online. It separates subscription access, free ad-supported viewing, rentals, and purchases because those options are not interchangeable.

- For the defining Redford–Paul Newman partnership: Start with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Its Sundance Kid role helped establish the screen persona that followed Redford for decades.
- For a classic caper: Choose The Sting, George Roy Hill’s con-artist comedy-drama, which reunites Redford with Newman.
- For romance and political-era drama: The Way We Were pairs Redford with Barbra Streisand in Sydney Pollack’s story of a relationship strained by conflicting ideals and ambition.
- For Redford’s serious, politically engaged persona: Watch All the President’s Men, in which he plays Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward opposite Dustin Hoffman’s Carl Bernstein.
- For an inspirational sports drama: The Natural casts Redford as Roy Hobbs, a baseball player attempting a remarkable late-career comeback.
What the viewing labels actually mean
Free with ads means the checked listing reported a no-rental-fee option supported by advertising. That applied to The Sting on YouTube at the time of the check. It does not mean that every upload or version of the film on a video platform is authorized or available in every region.
#1 Best Overall
YouTube TV is a subscription-based live-TV service, while YouTube being listed as free with ads is a separate access route. Likewise, a film listed on the Sony Pictures Core Amazon Channel should not be described as automatically included with a standard Amazon Prime membership. A channel subscription and an Amazon Video rental or purchase are different products.
Renting normally provides temporary digital access, while buying provides a digital license under the retailer’s terms. A rental is not free streaming, and an Amazon Video listing does not by itself mean that the film is included with Prime.
Rank #2
- This item has no German language and subtitles.
For readers who want a copy rather than a changing streaming listing, the checked information also showed physical-media availability for The Sting, including The Sting Blu-ray. The exact edition, price, shipping terms, and stock should be verified at the time of purchase.
For immediate digital access, readers can rent The Sting on Amazon Video or compare the other listed rental storefronts. The same caution applies: retailer pricing and availability can change, and the options listed here were not tested for playback.
Why Robert Redford’s legacy extends beyond acting
Redford was not only one of the defining stars of 1960s and 1970s American cinema. He was also a director, environmental advocate, and one of the most important institutional supporters of independent film in the United States.
His performance as the Sundance Kid helped inspire the name of Sundance Mountain Resort and later Sundance Institute. Redford founded Sundance Institute in 1981 to encourage independence, risk-taking, and new voices in filmmaking. The organization’s early work included artist labs; in 1985, it took over operations of the U.S. Film Festival in Park City, the event that became associated with the Sundance Film Festival.

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
That history makes Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid more than a famous western in this viewing guide. The character’s name became connected to a lasting effort to give filmmakers room to make unconventional work outside the traditional studio system.

Readers who want to connect a film rewatch with that continuing mission can support Sundance Institute and learn about its current work with artists through the organization’s official channels. That is a legacy and nonprofit-support route, not a claim about a commercial streaming service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is any Robert Redford film in this guide available free in the U.S.?
At the late-July 2026 check, The Sting was listed as free with ads on YouTube. The other four titles did not have a reported free U.S. option in the checked listings. That availability can change.
Is The Way We Were included with Amazon Prime?
The checked listing identified it as streaming through the Sony Pictures Core Amazon Channel. That is a separate channel subscription and should not be described as included with every standard Amazon Prime subscription.
What is the best Robert Redford film to watch first?
For his most recognizable star pairing, begin with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. For a classic caper, choose The Sting; for his politically serious screen persona, choose All the President’s Men.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: In the latest U.S. check, The Sting was the clearest low-cost starting point because it was listed free with ads on YouTube. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Way We Were, All the President’s Men, and The Natural were primarily paid digital options, with The Way We Were also listed through the Sony Pictures Core Amazon Channel. Recheck the catalog before watching, then look beyond Redford’s filmography to the independent filmmakers and artists supported by Sundance Institute.
